We're soliciting your selfies

Get out your camera phones and shoot a selfie! The Post & Mail would like Whitley County residents to email their selfie pics for a special Saturday feature promoting area people.

Selfies can include you and a friend or family member. Those who submit photos must be willing to accept a reply message that includes 10 quick questions that require a couple of short answers. Your photo and your answers will be published in a weekend issue of The Post & Mail. This is a fantastic way to highlight the great people that make up Whitley County.

SUCCESS COMES FULL CIRCLE: Lough conducted at festival

CHURUBUSCO — A long-time music teacher at Churubusco Elementary School recently had the chance to show off her students — and her skills — at a regional musical festival.

Sue Lough was invited to be a guest conductor for Circle the State with Songs, a program that takes place at multiple levels throughout the state.
Students from schools around the region learn songs, then come together for a day of rehearsal, which ends with a concert in the evening.

Besides having students participate, Lough said she was honored by the opportunity to guest-conduct.

DIFFERENCE MAKER: CES teacher’s tempo is ‘upbeat’

CHURUBUSCO — Music is more than a creative outlet for teacher Sue Lough.
Through more than three decades of teaching music to Churubusco Elementary School’s children, the class offers a variety of learning options.

“Sue has turned a music class into a time of learning that lasts long after the bell has rung,” said CES Principal Scott Fudge. “Our students have the chance to learn skills that might unlock a hidden talent or passion inside them.”

In class, students are exposed to learning techniques that include hand motions, movement and rhythm.

(March 10, 2014) -- Spring-like temperatures move into the area today as highs will reach into the 50s this afternoon. This warm up will last through Tuesday before the area sees another round of winter weather with some accumulation of snow.

Temperatures will be much colder by the middle of the week as highs will only be around 30 Wednesday and we will see another winter storm with accumulating snow possible through Wednesday evening.

Highs will again warm up be the end of the week as we reach toward 50° again.

Wilkins reflects on three decades at SGCS

CHURUBUSCO — A person who has worked behind the scenes, and often without much fanfare, is hoping her career ends the same way.

Pat Wilkins is retiring this year after 30 years of working for Smith-Green Community Schools (SGCS). For the past 15 years, she has been the superintendent’s secretary.

Wilkins has enjoyed her time at SGCS, and said it is a very fulfilling place to work.

RAINY DAY REMEDY: Fund to cover flood damage

COLUMBIA CITY — A Friday afternoon phone call answered by Whitley County Commissioner Don Amber led to an expense of more than $23,000.

Piling snow and heavy rains caused a flood in the basement of the Whitley County Government Center Feb. 21.

Wet carpet was found in a basement meeting room, but the source of water was unable to be located at the time.

By Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, Amber was on the scene only to find the source of the water came from a faulty sump pump.

Gardening class slated for S. Whitley

SOUTH WHITLEY — South Whitley gardeners are invited to a special presentation in preparation for spring gardening.

Beth Ann Sickafoose will present a short program, Favorite Flowers for Special Areas, at the South Whitley Community Public Library Thursday at 6:30 pm.

After the presentation, their will be a discussion of the possibility of a South Whitley area gardening group that would meet to share knowledge and experiences, help with community service activities, and take some interesting garden outings together throughout the year.

Local Kiwanis group gathers for first time

WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Kiwanis Club had its first official meeting since the election of its officers and board of directors in early January.

The Whitley County Kiwanis Club is part of Kiwanis International, a global organization dedicated to serving children and their communities.
This Club will work with local schools and churches in order to help promote and support multiple programs in Whitley County.
