COLUMBIA CITY â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s Police Department officially promoted a patrolman to sergeant on Monday.
Scott Leatherman, a longtime officer with the department, was selected to fill a recently-added sergeantâ€™s position. Columbia Cityâ€™s Board of Works approved the decision at Mondayâ€™s meeting.
Walt Crowder, of the Board of Works, sat in on the interview process that considered three applicants and took nearly four hours to complete Dec. 12.
WHITLEY COUNTY â€” With the calendar turning the page to a new year, many people decide to make a fresh start.
With that comes many resolutions, many with the goal of creating a healthier person for the new year.
In Whitley County, the YMCA was open for the second year in a row on New Yearâ€™s Day.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Snowfall greeted the new year as more than four inches blanketed Whitley County early this morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. today.
Although the snowfall was a concern as morning commuters made their way out and about, it is windy conditions that will make driving treacherous later this afternoon.
(Jan. 2, 2014) -- The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Whitley County and surrounding areas. Light to moderate snow will continue early this morning, but will begin to diminish during the late morning and afternoon. Additional accumulations of up to 4 inches are possible today.
Increased winds are expected to create blowing snow and drifting snow conditions, which will keep roads snow covered, slick and hazardous.
The winter advisory will remain in effect until 4 p.m. this afternoon.

COLUMBIA CITY â€” A man accused of pointing a firearm at two people will stand trial next month in Whitley County Superior Court.
Trent E. Vanderford, 25, of Columbia City, was arrested in May for pointing a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor.
He will have a jury trial Jan. 23, 2014, at 8 a.m. Jan 7, 2014, is the final date for a plea proposal to be accepted by the defense.

WARSAW â€” A Larwill man was arrested after running from Warsaw police Saturday.
Jeremy James King, 39, of Hammontree Street, Larwill, allegedly led police on a high-speed chase early Saturday morning.
The pursuit ended in a snowy crash after his Pontiac Firebird clipped a parked car and crashed into a snow bank on Anchorage Road, Warsaw.
WHITLEY COUNTY â€” A southern Indiana woman died on her way to a family gathering Christmas Eve, after attempting to drive through a flooded roadway.
The elderly woman was found several hours later in the flood waters.
In Pike County, officials searched for a missing Illinois woman.
Whitkoâ€™s girls basketball team captured the Miami County Tournament Saturday. Team members include: Jennifer Reiff, Reghan Craig, Haley Yohe, Brianna Cumberland, Hanna Yohe, Aly Reiff, Kelly Reiff, Avaree Freel, Michelle Kelsey, Emily Day, Aly Nicodemus and Jordan Hall. Aly Reiff and Hall were named to the all-tournament team. Whitko beat North Miami in the semifinals, 52-45, and defeated Peru in the championship game, 67-26.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” A Pierceton man is facing a charge of voyeurism after an incident at a local tanning salon.
Kolten C. Krull, 20, was arrested Dec. 16 by the Columbia City Police Department. He pleaded not guilty in his first appearance at Whitley County Superior Court Dec. 23.
Voyeurism is a Class B misdemeanor.
