Col. City welcomes Blue M. Medical

COLUMBIA CITY — An entrepreneur is planning to renovate a vacant Columbia City building to create 25 new jobs by 2016.

Bill Smith is launching Blue M Medical, LLC, joining several other Whitley County companies who announced job creation and investment plans in 2013 — Micropulse, Inc., Red Star Contract Manufacturing, Inc. and Sound Ideas.

Blue M Medical is a manufacturer of custom medical devices, which will locate its operations in Columbia City.

HOME IMPROVEMENT: Santa to arrive to remodeled house in Columbia City

COLUMBIA CITY — Santa is comin’ to town Friday.

With lights, floats and music, a parade will usher Santa into downtown Columbia City to his house, which is set up on the northwest corner of the Whitley County Courthouse lawn.

The little red house has been a staple holiday sight for decades, according to Jill Winebrenner, who has been a long-time coordinator of Santa’s House.

Beginning Friday night and on through Christmas Eve, children can visit Saint Nick at his home and have their photos taken with the holiday figure.

S. Whitley spellers compete in state event

SOUTH WHITLEY — South Whitley Elementary School’s Spell Bowl teams recently competed in state-wide event in Wabash at the Honeywell Center.
According to coaches, the fifth grade team did not fare as well as hoped. The group competed in the small-school division for fifth graders, but were not able to field a full team.

WCCS approves salary increases

COLUMBIA CITY — After nearly five years with no raises, Whitley County Consolidated Schools’ employees are getting a small bump next year.

The WCCS Board of Trustees approved a two-percent raise for school bus drivers, classified staff and administrators, effective in 2014.

“It has been several years since our employees have had increases,” WCCS Superintendent Pat O’Connor said.

A community Thanksgiving service will be held at Pierceton United Methodist Church Wednesday at 7 p.m.
A non-perishable food item will be the only donation taken. All will be given to the Washington Township Food Pantry.

West Point Trinity UM
West Point Trinity United Methodist Church will hold a Thanksgiving service at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The church is located at 4980 N. Etna Rd.

Thanksgiving Dinner
Columbia City Rotary Club will host a Community Thanksgiving Dinner Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 4-H Center, Columbia City.

Rochelle Leininger (left), PTO co-president, awarded Brandenburge this month’s prize which was a Bob Evans gift card. The next PTO meeting will be held Monday, Jan. 20. All parents attending are eligible for the drawing.

Task force collects phones for Hopeline project

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County collected 138 used cell phones in connection with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. Many local businesses, hospitals, restaurants, churches, schools, etc. had HopeLine collection boxes displayed at their locations.

The HopeLine project, which was sponsored by the Domestic Violence Task Force of Whitley County, is new this year, and the group is pleased with the results and grateful to all the locations that collected phones.

City man sentenced for BMV crash

COLUMBIA CITY — A man who crashed a vehicle into the Columbia City branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will serve two years behind bars for his crimes.

Danny C. Rose, Jr., 20, was sentenced to three years, with two to serve at the Whitley County Jail, for auto theft, a Class D felony. He was also given a two-year concurrent sentence for resisting law enforcement.

Rose was sentenced to 60 days for battery resulting in bodily injury, which will be served consecutively to the previous two charges.

Vacant seats filled for two planning boards

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Commissioners recently appointed two Cleveland Township residents to fill vacant seats on planning boards.

Mark Mynhier has joined the Whitley County Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals board.

Wayne Swender will fill the vacancy on the Plan Commission for South Whitley.

Both positions started immediately with the commissioners’ OK at their Nov. 18 meeting.

Turkey for hundreds: Community meal marks 8 years of service

COLUMBIA CITY — What began as a family affair has turned into a county-wide event, reaching out to local residents on Thanksgiving.

The Rotary Clubs annual Thanksgiving dinner is set for Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 4-H Center in Columbia City.

Although the Rotary Club is now one of the underwriters for the meal, it was Sherri Grim, of Columbia City, who first had the idea to serve a holiday meal.
