BARN FIRE: Battling the blaze

March 18, 2013

Crews battled a fully engulfed barn fire west of South Whitley late Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

The calf barn, located at 7900 W. Ind. 14, was on the property of Dewayne Gable. Firefighters from multiple townships battled the blaze, that was fully involved when they arrived on the scene.

No injuries were reported, but approximately 100 calves were lost in the fire. The blaze remains under investigation.

PROPERTIES REASSESSED: Whitley County releases tax information

COLUMBIA CITY — May 10 is the due date for residents of Whitley County to pay their first installment of property taxes.

The fall bill will be due Nov. 12. Forms will be in the mail by April 15.

According to Auditor Jen McGuire, Whitley County’s properties were re-assessed last year with a total value calculated at $1,336,049,342.

Most residents will see property tax increases, although the amount will vary from township to township and will depend on what city or town the property is located in.

GPA SCALE: WCCS weighs grade bonuses

COLUMBIA CITY — Course rigor is one of the goals of Whitley County Consolidated Schools.

Part of that goal is offering classes that are a challenge for students. To meet that aim, Advanced Placement (AP) classes are offered at Columbia City High School, as well as dual-course offerings with area colleges. There are also honors courses offered.

FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY: Slick and slow going for early Monday driving

COLUMBIA CITY – The National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory for Whitley County through 11 a.m. Monday. Freezing rain was pelting the Columbia City area shortly after 4:45 a.m. Monday.

STRIP CLUBS BANNED: City passes ordinance to keep clubs out of town

COLUMBIA CITY — An ordinance approved at Tuesday’s Columbia City Common Council meeting will ban nude or seminude acts for entertainment.
The council unanimously approved the first reading of Ordinance 2013-11, which prohibits unclothed acts in commercial establishments within the city limits.

Fines for violation will be $250 on first offense, $500 on second and the fine for the third offense will not be less than $750 but not more than $2,500.

Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel said this ordinance was a matter of the city attempting to get ahead of a problem rather than be behind it.

AIRPLANE CRASH: Aircraft crashes into house near S. Bend airport

SOUTH BEND (AP) — Local news media say an aircraft has crashed into a home near South Bend Regional Airport in northern Indiana.

Area media reported the neighborhood, where the plane crashed, was being evacuated because of a gas leak.

Online media reported that the plane was a Lear jet.

A message seeking information was left for a Federal Aviation Administration representative, but no other information has been released.

MYRTLE BEACH - The Whitley County Dazzlers won its national championship in Myrtle Beach, Fla. The Dazzlers is a special needs cheerleading group coached by Vanessa Bills.
