NEW GROCERY STORE: S. Whitley welcomes Midtown Market

SOUTH WHITLEY — South Whitley will soon have a grocery store within its city limits. Midtown Market, which has another operation in Orland, plans to open its doors Jan. 9. Owners Rick and Lisa Rogers, of Fort Wayne, have owned Midtown Market for two and a half years. The grocery store will reside in what was the former Heyerly’s location, 101 W. First St., South Whitley.

The Rogerses tried to make a move approximately a year ago, but at the time an agreement could not be reached. “Now some hurdles have cleared and we are ready to move forward,” said Rogers.

WMS LEGOS GROUP: Robotics club parlays technology into life lessons

LARWILL — Whitko Middle School students represented their school in a state robotics competition Saturday at IPFW. Lego Robotics is an extra-curricular club at WMS and gives students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade a chance to try their hand at designing, building and programming Lego robots.

Teresa Knepple is the group’s coach and is a teacher at WMS. This is the first time Knepple and the WMS team has advanced to the state competiton. The group has been competing for seven years, but been in existence for 13.

TOYS FOR TOTS: Marines help 'stuff the cruiser'

COLUMBIA CITY — Marines are depicted as tough, battle-ready men, but when working with Toys for Tots, the rough- and-tough Marines take time to reach out to children in need. Toys for Tots is a nation-wide organization with a mission to see that children receive toys at Christmas time.

During the Community Christmas Celebration, held Friday and Saturday night, Marines were on hand to encourage donations to “stuff the cruiser” parked in front of the Whitley County Courthouse.

ATV ALTERCATION: Juvenile rams ATV before turning on law enforcement

MILFORD — A 15-year-old Milford youth is in custody at a Pierceton juvenile facility after striking two squad cars Saturday evening with a skid-loader.
Officers from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police responded Saturday night at 8:40 p.m. to the area of County Road 250 West and County Road 900 North in regards to a juvenile that was out of control.
Officers arrived and met with parents of the 15-year-old juvenile who explained that their son had fled the residence in a farm implement skid-loader, crossing into an adjacent field.

MOM ON A MISSION: Park renovation sparks revitalization

SOUTH WHITLEY — Katey Till, of South Whitley, has been on task to see the South Whitley Town Park is a “lasting treasure for children now and in the future.”

Just a typical mom, Till has changed the face of the town she lives in by tackling a project costing in excess of $100,000.
“I guess I was feeling ambitious,”said Till.

In 2007, Till and a fellow South Whitley mother, Colleen French, looked at the existing playground area located behind the town hall and decided new playground equipment was needed both for their children as well as others.
