COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ ‚ÄúLet Me Call You Sweetheart,‚Äú ‚ÄúLittle Arrows‚ÄĚ and ‚ÄúUnforgettable‚ÄĚ were just some of the tunes flowing through The Oaks during it‚Äôs annual Valentine‚Äôs Day party Tuesday. The social room was packed with nearly all the residents at The Oaks.
They clapped, sang and shouted as Jay Fox entertained with an old-fashioned accordion for nearly an hour and his wife Patrice sang along.
Helen Arter was named Valentine‚Äôs Day Queen 2012. The queen received a crown and roses. The first runner-up was Viola Baker. She received a teddy bear.
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ Columbia City High School senior, Michaela Thomas, will be competing at the state level of the Distinguished Young Women Program (DYW), formally known as Junior Miss. Thomas‚Äô name replaces 2011 winner, Cassandra Petrie.
Pamela Thompson, co-coordinator of the Whitley County franchise of the DYW, will join Thomas on her trip to Kokomo as she becomes the county‚Äôs 48th representative to attend the competition.
‚ÄúShe is a joy to work with,‚ÄĚ said Thompson.
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ Being the next American Idol is an extreme long shot. But Churubusco‚Äôs Alex McDowell took that shot and auditioned in front of the three judges for the popular television show.
He and three of his friends made their way to St. Louis during the summer of 2011 and say they had a great time during the grueling audition process.
‚ÄúMy friends and I are all in the Ball State Singers Glee Club and we heard about the auditions being in St. Louis, so we traveled there,‚ÄĚ said McDowell.
Paul Herron, 85, long-time fireman in Union Township, died Wednesday. In addition to being a firefighter, he was a World War II veteran.

COLUMBIA CITY ‚Äď Signature Giving is taking applications for the Signature Giving Vocational Scholarship.
Whitley County high school seniors who are seeking a vocational degree or certificate are encouraged to apply.
Applications are available at Columbia City High School, Whitko High School, and Churubusco High School and are due by April 21, 2012.
Some of the criteria the selection committee is requesting are: 2.5 GPA or higher, career goals, where you see yourself in five years, and how your future profession/ career will benefit the community of Whitley County.
Light snow is falling across Whitley County this morning, Valentine's Day.
Whitley County had recorded about two inches of snow by 5 a.m. Freezing drizzle is also adding to already slick road conditions.
Local roads are snow-covered and slick. Stopping at intersections or trying to slow in a hurry will be nearly impossible until road conditions improve. A very small number of slide-offs and minor non-injury accidents have happened in the region.
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ The wind discussion will soon be making its way from the lower level conference room of the Whitley County Government Center ‚ÄĒ where the Whitley County Plan Commission meets ‚ÄĒ to the main conference chambers of the Whitley County Commissioners one floor up.
The commissioners spoke briefly last week with Plan Commission President Brandon Forrester about a potential timetable in regard to when the commissioners may have the wind turbine ordinance in front of them.
Local firefighters battled a garage fire Friday afternoon at 3321 W. Keck Rd. near Loon Lake. According to the Whitley County GIS site, the home is deeded to James and Linda Hale. Firefighters received the call at approximately 12:30 p.m. and the fire was marked ‚Äúunder control‚ÄĚ by 1:05 p.m. Richland Township, Thorncreek Township and Noble County firemen all responded to the scene. COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ Parkview Whitley Hospital‚Äôs nursing staff has received a national accolade, according to a hospital press release.
The hospital announced Friday it had been chosen as the recipient of the American Nurses Association‚Äôs (ANA) National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) Award for Outstanding Nursing Quality for a Community Hospital in the year 2011. The award recognizes hospitals that improve patient outcomes and maintain high nurse job satisfaction, the hospital said, adding that the NDNQI is the nation‚Äôs most comprehensive database of nursing performance measures.
