PARADE: Christmas to come to downtown Col. City tonight

COLUMBIA CITY — With reindeer, lights and the sounds of Christmas, Santa will be ushered to his house on the Courthouse Square Friday night.

The City of Columbia City and the Downtown Business Association, along with The Clugston on the Square, will present a lighted Christmas parade Friday at 6 p.m.

This is the first parade of its kind in Columbia City in recent memory.

Once Santa reaches the Courthouse, a holiday lighting ceremony will initiate the holiday season as Santa begins entertaining children.

'FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES': New playground to be assembled at Morsches Park

COLUMBIA CITY — Neon green and yellow colored playground equipment is scheduled to fill the recently empty spot where the old playground at Morsches Park once stood. The Columbia City Parks Department tore the old playground down last week.

“I think the kids are going to love it, and it will be good for all ages,” said Columbia City Park Director Mark Green. “There will be a swing set area, a large teeter totter you can stand on and the slides should be a little taller than what we had.”

INTERNET POLICY: WCCS to implement revisions for online safety

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees is preparing to implement internet safety policies to better protect its students.

According to WCCS Superintendent Dr. Pat O’Connor, the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was amended last fall and now requires school corporations to provide age appropriate curriculum concerning proper online behavior.

“This includes interacting with others on social networking sites, in chat rooms and cyberbullying awareness,” explained Dr. O’Connor.

SMALL BIZ BLITZ: Local consumers poised to shop locally Saturday

Consumers say they will be out in full force on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, "Small Business Saturday," to support the small businesses that fuel the U.S. economy, create jobs and keep communities thriving.

Of the tens of millions of Americans familiar with Small Business Saturday, 67 percent are planning to “shop small” on Nov. 24 (44% said they shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday in 2011), according to the Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey.

CAUTION: Dense fog causes multiple Whitley County crashes

According to police scanner traffic, Whitley County has had multiple crashes in the last hour.

Dense fog is creating hazardous road conditions and many area schools have closed.

Use caution when traveling.

FOG ADVISORY: Remaining in effect until 11 a.m. today

The National Weather Service of Northern Indiana has a dense fog advisory, remaining in effect until 11 a.m. this morning.

According to the weather service, a dense fog advisory means visibility will frequently be reduced to one quarter mile or less.

METH CHARGES: 'Busco brothers arrested

COLUMBIA CITY — Two Churubusco brothers appeared in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday for an initial hearing after a search warrant turned up drugs at their residence last week.

Benjamin, 30, and Andrew Greer, 28, were arrested on methamphetamine and marijuana charges after the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) searched their home at 7755 E. CR 150 N. on Nov. 15.

According to a case report by the Whitley County Drug Task Force, before the search, ERT officers witnessed Andrew throwing items out of the upstairs window onto a lower roof.

NOT FORGOTTEN: Fellow veteran recounts the memory of a fallen friend

SOUTH WHITLEY — Like a fresh wound, the memory of Anthony Wagner’s death is a sensitive and raw memory for Travis Leon — even after a decade has past.

Wagner, of South Whitley, and Leon, of Fort Wayne, were childhood friends and found themselves in the 293rd National Guard Division of Indiana in 2002.

Wagner joined the National Guard in 2001, a little more than a month after his 21st birthday. Leon was right behind him.

Private First Class Wagner received notice in October of 2002 that he had been activated and would be leaving the states to serve in Iraq.

FORMER WCCS MEMBER: Eager to return for a second go-around

COLUMBIA CITY — After taking a break to plan his retirement, newly elected Whitley County Consolidated School board member Bill Tucker said he is ready for a second go-around.

“I’m humbled by the support the community has given me, and I’m anxious to get back on the board,” said Tucker.

Tucker first served as a WCCS Jefferson Township board member seven years ago, when he was approached by board members and asked to consider the job.
