COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Courthouse, a symbol of Columbia City since it was opened in 1888, recently had some restoration done, with more work on the way.
“It is the center point of Whitley County, and what people see when they come to Columbia City,” said Mark Sturtevant, with the courthouse maintenance department. “A lot of local businesses use the image of the courthouse.”
The courthouse sits in the middle of four acres of land towering over surrounding buildings, and displays its Renaissance architecture.

COLUMBIA CITY — Downtown Columbia City will be host to high horsepower engines and brilliant chrome Saturday when classic car enthusiasts from all over converge on the Courthouse square for the 11th annual Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show to benefit Junior Achievement Serving Whitley County.
The show will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with gates opening at 8 a.m. Judging will end at 11 a.m. and awards will be presented at 1 p.m.

SAL. ARMY: Handing out donated school supplies

COLUMBIA CITY — With summer’s end and the sound of the school bell just around corner, the Salvation Army of Whitley County is hoping to ease the financial burden some parents face sending their kids back to school.
As the Salvation Army loaded up with school supplies Saturday for its annual Pack-A-Truck outside of Shoe Show, numerous donors contributed to the cause, providing the organization with means to help children in the community this Saturday.
“We had many donations,” said Community Ministries Specialist Pat Mossburg.

Free concert
The Messengers Quartet will be in concert at Merriam Christian Chapel on Saturday at 7 p.m. This will be a free concert. The church is located at 3985 S. U.S. 33, Albion.

Clothing giveaway
Pierceton United Methodist Church is holding its annual free garage sale Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Fellowship room of the church. Shoppers are invited to come in and fill a bag or two of clean, gently used clothing of all sizes. There is no cost for any of the clothing items. This is a mission outreach of the ladies of the church.

HELPING HAITI: Mission-minded men propelled by a just cause

COLUMBIA CITY — Out of small, rural towns in Indiana, three young men had an idea to leave their protective, familiar circles and travel to Haiti.
Thaddeus McKee, 24, Jeff Royer, 22 and Alex Carlin, 23, all from Whitley County, recently returned from a long trip of service to the areas of Pierre Payen and Boreal, Haiti.
McKee spent six months in Haiti working with GAP Ministries before founding JUST Cause International (JCI) and convincing his two friends, Royer and Carlin, to join in the crusade.

REBUILDING: Stockamp barn goes up

Tom and Laurel Stockamp are in the process of having their barn re-built after a large portion of it was engulfed in flames Feb. 28. Workers were busy putting the green roof on the barn Wednesday. Mark Graf with Steel Core Construction Co. is responsible for the building design and Andy Hostetler is in charge of Ideal Construction from Warsaw. The Stockamps believe the barn will be finished by the end of the month. More photos will appear in the Friday edition of The Post & Mail.

PERTUSSIS: County has no reported cases; urges vaccines

COLUMBIA CITY — While the Associated Press has reported outbreaks of whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, affecting parts of the country, Whitley County has avoided the infectious disease.
“We’ve not had any cases reported,” said April Waugh, R.N., Immunization Nurse at the Whitley County Immunization Clinic.
