A POOL OF IDEAS: Members of public share opinions concerning Burnworth

COLUMBIA CITY — The first forum concerning the future of the Burnworth Memorial Pool took place Wednesday, giving members of the public an opportunity to listen to the assessment, ask questions and give opinions.
Sam Blake, with Spear Corporation, said the 52-year-old pool, which was renovated in 1991, has a number of conditions which need, or will need, to be addressed in the near future, including the pvc membrane (liner), the filtration system and the pool heater.

LEEUW: Wins slew of ISF poultry prizes

COLUMBIA CITY — Jackie Leeuw, 18, is used to being named champion in poultry competition at the Whitley County 4-H Fair and is getting honors at the Indiana State Fair as well.
Recently she won ISF’s Grand Champion Roasters and Meat Type Overall and Reserve Grand Champion Commercial Overall.
There were 30 other cages of chickens in the meat division and 50 cages of chickens in the overall round.
Leeuw had two chickens in the Sale Of Champ-ions at the 2012 ISF.
“This was my second time in the Sale of Champions and it was really cool,” said Leeuw.

BENEFIT: Local family to tee up for Alzheimer’s Association

COLUMBIA CITY­ — A benefit to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association is taking place at Magic Hills Golf Course Sept. 15.
A four person golf scramble will be hosted by Magic Hills and will cost $50 per person.
But this event has its own twist. One hundred percent of the money collected is going to the Alzheimer’s Association.
According to the Indiana Golf Office, golf outings used as fundraisers can lose up to 75 percent of monies collected in team fees and sponsors to the hosting golf course.

The next meeting of the Whitley County Amateur Radio Club (WCARC) will be held tonight at the Peabody Library starting at 7 p.m. in the Lower Level Community Room A. The library is located at 1160 E. Ind. 205 in Columbia City. The program for the evening will be a demonstration on the new SDR/Flex radio presented by Paul Patterson / AE9P. All WCARC general meetings are open to the public. SOUTH WHITLEY ­— The Whitley County Democrats held its annual Thomas Marshall Dinner Monday night. Among the guests were Kevin Boyd, candidate for Congress.
Boyd said that he wanted to run for the U.S. House of Representatives because he knows how difficult the lives of Americans are today.
“I share the determination and hard work of many struggling families in northeast Indiana, having worked two jobs since 2007 just to make ends meet,” said Boyd.
Boyd has been a Fort Wayne resident since 1989. He and his wife, Barb, have raised two children, Diana and Rob.
