Robert Nobbe, above, of Connersville, takes a look at one of his many insulators that he will have for sale at the Columbia City Insulator, Bottle & Antique Show today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whitley County 4-H Center. This brown giant insulator is from Montana. Robert, along with his wife, Darleen, have been coming to this show for at least 20 years. The couple has collected insulators for 45 years.
LARWILL â€” With the U.S. Postal Service proposing sharp cutbacks to hours of operation, more than 13,000 post offices across the country may experience changes to office hours in the future. For Whitley County, this could mean changes at the post office in Larwill.
â€śThe plan last year was that we had 3,700 post offices under review for possible closure,â€ť said spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service Mary Dando.
â€śThe strategy that was announced last week was that we keep them open.â€ť
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Local police are investigating a student at Indian Springs Middle School, after 40-60 students were reportedly stabbed with a sewing needle.
According to the Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Department, four reports came in Thursday evening about the crime.
â€śThe school sent out a letter that said 40-60 students got poked by the needle,â€ť WCSD Det. Chuck Vogley said.
Kim Porter, the aunt of a 7th-grade student at ISMS, said her 13-year-old niece was afraid to report the student.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Itâ€™s a time-honored tradition to have a Veterans Memorial Day Parade throughout Columbia City and ending at Greenhill Cemetery.
It is happening again this year and members of the American Legion Post 98 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars 5582 are inviting all veterans of any age to participate in this yearâ€™s parade.
Line-up begins at 9:45 a.m. at Walnut Street in front of the former Marshall Middle School, now Eagle Tech.
COLUMBIA CITY - The most recent www.thepostandmail.com polling results from online respondents shows Republican Richard Mourdock beating Democrat Joe Donnelly if the election for U.S. Senator from Indiana were held today. Results were 45% for Mourdock, 34% for Donnelly and 34% undecided or disengaged.
FORT WAYNE â€” Detectives of Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division's Fort Wayne post are investigating an early morning shooting involving a trooper that occurred just outside downtown Fort Wayne and which resulted in the death of a 33-year-old man.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a four-and-a half year veteran of the Indiana State Police was traveling west on Main Street when at the intersection of Cherry Street, he observed an altercation between multiple people.
Local police responded to West Buckeye Street in South Whitley Tuesday night after a car drove into a house. An ambulance was dispatched to the area, and according to police scanner traffic, the crash may have been caused by medical issues. Nobody in the house was injured. The crash remains under investigation by the South Whitley Police Department and the Whitley County Sheriffâ€™s Department. Names of the person or persons involved in the crash were not available at press time.
CHURUBUSCO â€” A Churubusco town employee was fired Wednesday night after the town council listened to disputes and put the matter to a vote.
â€śYour counsel can contact our counsel,â€ť said Council President Frank Kessler to former Wastewater Treatment Supervisor Bob Hyatt.
Hyatt read a letter he received Monday from Madalyn Sade-Bartl, clerk/treasurer, and Jeremy Hart, town supervisor.
â€śThe letter was stating there was a digester spill and it was not documented nor was my supervisor notified,â€ť said Hyatt.

Franciscan Fireworks will be hosting a fireworks demo at 2300 E Cardinal Dr. Friday 8 p.m. Chairs will not be provided so spectators will need to bring their own.
Clothing giveaway Saturday
The Center will be sponsoring a free clothing giveaway for anyone in need Saturday Mens, womens, and childrenâ€™s sizes available. The giveaway will start at 9 a.m. The Center is located at 201 W. Market St. in Columbia City.
