NORTH WEBSTER – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a tree stand accident at Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area near North Webster in Kosciusko County that occurred Saturday, January 7.

Kosciusko County Dispatch received a 911 call at 1:24 p.m. obtaining information that a hunter fell from an elevated location.

FOUR HOOSIER GUARDSMEN PERISH: Indiana National Guardsmen killed in Afghanistan during roadside clearing operation

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Four soldiers with an Indiana-based National Guard unit were killed in Afghanistan and a fifth was injured when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb as they were working to clear a supply route of the improvised bombs, guard officials said Saturday.

Indiana Adjutant General Martin Umbarger said the four members of the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Company died Thursday morning in southern Afghanistan. He said all of the men were combat engineers who specialized in clearing major supply routes.

SAFE & SOUND: Man rescued from Raber Elevator; trapped for 8 hours

COLUMBIA CITY — A man was saved early Saturday morning night after being trapped inside a silo on Raber Road for nearly eight hours.

Around 4 p.m. Friday, the man was found buried to his waist in soybeans, he wasn't removed until 12:13 a.m. Saturday.

Firefighters from Jefferson Township, Columbia City and Fort Wayne responded with ladder trucks and local farmers provided grain vacuums to lower the level of grain, allowing rescuers to free the man's legs.

PAGES WANTED: State Rep. Kathy Heuer seeks students to serve as ’12 legislative pages

Area students who are interested in serving as single-day pages in the Indiana House of Representatives are encouraged to sign up for the 2012 session.

By serving as a House page, students are given the opportunity to view and participate in the day-to-day activities of the General Assembly.

JOIN 4-H FUN: 4-H Open House is scheduled for Jan. 26

COLUMBIA CITY – A 4-H Open House is scheduled for all families and young 4-H Members at the 4-H Center (West Room) Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
The 4-H Open House will last approximately one hour. Information about enrollment, projects and other activities will be available.
This will be a great opportunity for families who are not familiar with the 4-H program or are just starting 4-H to ask questions and gather information, note 4-H organizers.
Enrollment forms will be available. Open enrollment for Mini and Regular 4-H will be starting in February through April 2.

ROUND 'EM UP: Whitley County Consolidated Schools establish kindergarten roundup dates

COLUMBIA CITY – Kindergarten Round-up dates have been established in March for Whitley County Consolidated Schools.

Parents are instructed by school officials to call each elementary school office to set up an appointment time for the appropriate date.

School, roundup dates and office phone numbers are:
•Coesse Elementary, Thursday, March 15. Call for an appointment 244-3351.
•Northern Heights Elementary, Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21. Call for an appointment 691-2371.
•Mary Raber Elementary, Thursday, March 22. Call for an appointment 244-5857.

IVY TECH AT CCHS: IVY Tech classes begin at Col. City High School

IVY Tech Community College will be holding classes Monday through Wednesday evenings at Columbia City High School beginning Jan. 9 and running through May 2.

Classes include:
•Fundamentals of Alge-bra I and II
•Introduction to College Writing
•Introduction to Psycho-logy
•Anatomy/Physiology I
•Concepts in Mathemat-ics
There will be no classes held on Jan. 16, (Martin Luther King Day) and April 2–6 (WCCS Spring Break).

WHO'S YOUR DADDY?: ‘Share an Ancestor’ at Jan. 19 meeting of Genealogy group

The Whitley County Genealogy Society will meet Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m.., in the Peabody Public Library.

The program is “Share An Ancestor.”
Ancestors do not need to be famous, just a family member you would like to share.

Anyone is welcome to come to the meetings; you need not be a member.

EEL RIVER TRAIL: Friends update newest project; meeting Thursday will detail South Whitley paved trail

SOUTH WHITLEY – Last October the Friends of the Eel River Trail obtained a 1,600-foot length of the abandoned railbed of the Eel River Railroad in South Whitley.
This parcel of land was previously owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
A gravel path runs along the railbed from Calhoun Street in South Whitley through beautiful quiet woods to the old railroad trestle east of town.

BANNED: 'Spice' still an issue in Whitley County, U.S.

COLUMBIA CITY — Despite July 2011’s ban on synthetic marijuana, commonly known as “spice”, is still prevalent in Whitley County and much of Indiana.
Though the marijuana-like drug can’t be found on shelves at local businesses, Whitley County Drug Task Force Leader and Sheriff’s Detective Bill Brice said people are going to Fort Wayne or buying the substance on the internet.
“The ordinance has helped keep the illegal stuff off the shelves, but it’s still out there,” Brice said.
