PROM TIME: CCHS collecting prom dresses for annual giveaway program

COLUMBIA CITY — It’s prom time and the only thing that is missing is the dress.
Columbia City High School is now accepting clean and gently-used prom dresses and accessories for its annual Free Prom Dress Give Away program.

Dresses and accessories can be dropped off at the front office of CCHS from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The giveaway is open to all girls who need or want a prom dress.

March 11 is the date set for the give away and will take place at CCHS from 3:30 to 5 p.m., or until all individuals are taken care of.

ALL ABOUT THE WATER: Discussions heat up in South Whitley

SOUTH WHITLEY — An abundance of important community-related issues gave the residents of South Whitley cause to come out to the town’s council meeting Tuesday night.

Due to the arrival of the more than 30 residents, the council meeting was moved from the town’s usual meeting place, the council chamber, and into the adjoining community recreation room.
The topic that appeared to be a focus on most residents’ minds — the town’s water.

HOUSING MARKET: Affordability and availability watchwords for 2015

COLUMBIA CITY — The new year brings a set of questions and concerns about the economy in general, and in particular the segment of the economy that involves the housing market. A recent United Way of Indiana report rated Whitley County as lacking in affordable housing.

Scott Darley, of Coldwell Banker Roth Wehrly Graber Real Estate, took a different look at the issue.

COLUMBIA CITY — The tickets are running out fast for the annual Father-Daughter Dance, hosted by the Columbia City Park Department.

Park Director Mark Green said more than half of the tickets have already been sold.
“They’re going really quickly,” Green told the City Council Tuesday night.

DONATION AT A COST: Downtown building deemed dangerous, will be razed

COLUMBIA CITY — A donation of downtown property to the city’s redevelopment commission will come at a cost, officials say. The owner of the two-story building at 213 W. Van Buren Street, in Columbia City, has offered to give the building and land to the city.

The building, approximately 20 feet wide and 75 feet long, is located on the alley on the south side of Van Buren Street, between Chauncey and Line streets. Though in a prime location, the building is leaning and has been deemed unstable.

BIG THANKS: The Lighthouse flourishes from holiday gifts

COLUMBIA CITY — Since the holiday season has come to a close, board members and staff for InterFaith Mission, Inc. are offering a bit of thanks for the variety of donors that supported The Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse is a nonprofit transitional shelter serving the homeless and displaced in Whitley County. While celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas, some community members and organizations found time and resources to help the shelter.

WARNER VACATES POSITION: Caucus to fill Cleveland Township board seat

COLUMBIA CITY — As of Jan. 1, a Cleveland Township board member seat has been vacant.
The position, held by Thomas Warner, was vacated after he submitted a resignation letter that took effect immediately.

The Whitley County Republican Committee is looking to fill the spot, and will hold a caucus at the end of the month.
