March 20th
Phyllis J. Monesmith, 76, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
Born in LaGrange County, Phyllis worked with Dana Corporation in Churubusco for 29 years, retiring in 1997. Her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her number one priority. She loved antique collecting and old-time county music.
March 19th
Leon Braden Alter, 105, of North Manchester, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at Timbercrest where he had been a resident since 1984.
He was born Feb. 24, 1908, in Forest, a son of Leander Clinton and Anna Grace (Braden) Alter. He graduated from Forest High School in 1927, and Purdue University in 1933, with a degree in agriculture education.
Richard Roscoe Hatton, 54, a lifelong resident of Bear Lake, died at 8:50 a.m. Sunday, March 17, 2013, at his home.
He was born Feb. 1, 1959, in Fort Wayne. He graduated from Central Noble High School in 1978.
He was employed for more than 20 years at Dexter Axle.
His lifetime memberships included North America Hunting Club and North American Fishing Club.
March 18th
Dallas Leon “Bud” Shively, 85, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday morning, March 17, 2013.
Bud was born June 17, 1927, on the family farm in Thorncreek Township, to Murry and Eva (Strouse) Shively. A 1945 graduate of Wolf Lake High School, he was a member of the 1941-42 Wolf Lake semi-state finals basketball team.
On Dec. 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to June J. (Rarick) in the Wolf Lake Baptist Church. She survives.
Aladean “Allie” Weaver, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday March 16, 2013, at 1:05 a.m. at The Heritage of Huntington.
She worked as a repairer and finisher at Square D for 22 years. She was a member of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was known for her cinnamon rolls.
Allie was born July 23, 1925, in Jefferson Township, the daughter of Thomas Major and Bertha B. (Geist) Swing.
On June 19, 1947, she married her beloved husband Robert DeLoss Weaver in Roanoke and he passed away Jan. 12, 2007.
March 15th
Jamin Micah Winebrenner, 29, a resident of Churubusco, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, March 14, 2013, at his home.
Jamin was born Jan. 30, 1984, in Columbia City, a son of Steven and Cindy (Herendeen) Winebrenner, was educated at Smith-Green Community Schools, and was a lifelong resident of Churubusco.
March 12th
Shelly Lynn Smith, 62 of Huntington, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at her residence. Shelly was born July 9, 1950, in Columbia City, the daughter of Philip A. and Rose M. (Clark) Myers.
Surviving relatives include her husband, a son, a daughter, two brothers, seven grandchildren and several special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle Myers.
March 11th
Gladys Vera Szelis, 91, of Huntington, passed away at 12:28 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Oakbrook Village.
Gladys was born April 14, 1921, in Huntington a daughter of Leander and Dorothy May (Brann) Mote.
Survivors include a brother and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St. Huntington.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, at 2 p.m. following visitation at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel with Pastor Joe Hostetler officiating.
Darwin R. Sievers, 64, of Fort Wayne, died at 3:13 a.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at Vibra Hospital. He was born April 24, 1948, in Wolf Lake, a son of Russell E. and Evelyn L. (Schrader) Sievers.
His formative years were spent in Columbia Township. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School, received his bachelor’s degree in English and history from Ball State University and his master’s degree in education from Ball State University.
Madge M. Mathias, 94, of Richland Township, died at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City, where she had been a resident since Jan. 28.
She was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Grant County, a daughter of Ward B. and Hester (Craig) Sharp. As a teen, her family moved to Kosciusko County.
On April 16, 1938, she was united in marriage to Jess T. Mathias. They always made their home on the Mathias family farm in Richland Township, moving to their home on 600 West in 1974. Mr. Mathias died March 28, 1999.
