Mary Ellen Mowrey, 94

Mary Ellen Mowrey, 94 of Pierceton, passed away at 4:32 am Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, in Millers Merry Manor, Warsaw.
On May 6, 1920, she was born in Wabash County, to Ralph and Esther (Smuck) Hawkins.
She was united in marriage to John F. Mowrey Aug. 22, 1941, who preceded her in death in March 13, 1973.
Mary Ellen graduated in 1938 from Somerset High School and from the nurses training program at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, in 1941.

Jan Bristow, 71

Jan Alynn Bristow, 71, of rural South Whitley, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 30, 2014 at his home after a short illness.
He was born April 28, 1943, in Detroit, Mich., a son of James M. and Dorothy G. (Terman) Bristow.
In 1946, his family moved to South Whitley and in 1959, to Urbana. He graduated from Urbana High School.
In 1961, he moved to Fort Wayne. He served in the Indiana Air Force Air Guard from 1964 until 1973.
He was employed at International Harvester for several years and retired from Manchester Tool & Die in 2007.

Ruth Felger, 96

Ruth Evelyn Felger, 96, of Fort Wayne, passed Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at Visiting Nurse.
She was born Sept. 27, 1918, to the late Solomon and Ellen Gerber.
During her younger years she worked at General Electric and also led herself and her three sisters in a traveling quartet called the “Gerber Sisters” during the 1930s and 1940s. She played the lead guitar. She loved country music and attending concerts.

Max Secrist, 93

Max R. Secrist, 93, of rural Columbia City, died at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at his home. He was born August 20, 1921, in Urbana, to Adam and Florence Edna (Huffer) Secrist.
Max was a 1940 graduate of Atwood High School. He married Virginia Kreger in Warsaw Feb. 22, 1942. She died July 11, 2007.
He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. Max retired from Conrail Feb. 22, 1982, after 40 years, where he was a conductor and a brakeman.

Michael Hoover, 51

Michael A. Hoover, 51, of Wolcottville, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at his home at Atwood Lake.
Mike was born March 27, 1963, in Columbia City and was the son of Rex H. and Kay A. (Patten) Hoover.
He had started working at Scott’s Restaurant in South Whitley and some part time jobs before working at Dwyer Instruments from 1984 until 1999. He then worked at AutoLiv for a few years and in 2003, he started working for Wal-Mart in Columbia City and the past two years at the Kendallville store.

J. Phillip Blake, 83

Rev. J. Phillip Blake, 83, formerly of Columbia City, died at 9:42 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014 at North Ridge Village Nursing and Rehab in Albion where he had been a resident since April 2011.
He was born Aug. 4, 1931, in Delaware County, a son of Joseph H. and Ruth E. (Jackson) Blake.
Phil spent seven years on the farm his great-grandfather homesteaded in 1859 in the Alexandria area. He was educated in the Madison County School system and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1949.

L. DeWayne Gable, 80

L. DeWayne Gable, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at his home.
He was born July 25, 1934 in Whitley County, a son of the late Delmar and Ethel (Miller) Gable.
His formative years were spent in the South Whitley area. He graduated from South Whitley High School.
On March 17, 1956 he was united in marriage to Shirley O. McGrath. They made their home at Gable Acres in rural South Whitley.
In 1957, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to his farm in rural South Whitley.

Roger D. Geiger, 87

Roger D. Geiger, 87, of Albion, passed away at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at Parkview Oaks, Columbia City.
Born March 11, 1927, in Noble County, he was the son of Harold and Treva (Ritter) Geiger.
He attended Wolf Lake Schools. He worked at Liberty Coach in Syracuse and retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne. He was also a lifetime farmer and drove school bus for Wolf Lake.
After the loss of his first wife, Roger married Joan Fruchey Nov. 30, 1999, at West Point Church, where he also had attended.

Barbara VanWey, 69

Barbara J. VanWey, 69, of South Whitley, passed away peacefully at her home at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014. She had been in failing health.
She was born Sept. 20, 1945, in Logansport, a daughter of the late Von and Francis (McWhinney) Anderson.
Her formative years were spent in Rochester and Warsaw. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1964. She then completed flight attendant school.
On June 26, 1965, she was united in marriage to James Van Wey. They have always made their home in South Whitley.

Robert Watson, 83

Robert Lee Watson, 83, died at 7:43 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, where he had been a resident since June.
He was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Wells County, a son of William Henry and Constance (Moore) Watson.
He spent his formative years in Etna Troy Township and attended Larwill High School.
He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War and fought in the Battle of Pusan.
