Stanley Walter, 83

June 21, 2012

Stanley George Walter, 83, of Columbia City, died at midnight on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Life Care Nursing Home in Fort Wayne.
Born Feb. 22, 1929, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Willard M. and Gertrude (Mayland) Walter.
He attended Churubusco High School. On April 18, 1953, he married Rilla Jane Harroff in Angola. Throughout his lifetime, he lived in DeKalb, Whitley and Allen counties.
His employment included Kendallville Foundry, Johnson Brother’s Farm, Walmart of Auburn and Schneider National and Morgan Drive Away.

Grace Lemon, 96

L. Grace Lemon, 96, formerly of Columbia City, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville where she had been a resident since May 2010.
She was born Jan. 18, 1916, in Whitley County, a daughter of Myron Jay and Jessie (Tinkham) Western.
Her formative years were spent in Troy Township. She graduated from Larwill High School.
On April 23, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clarence E. Lemon. They made their home in Troy Township until 1973, when they moved to Columbia City. Mr. Lemon died Aug. 20, 1994.

Kevin Mitchell, 57

Kevin Dale Mitchell, 57, of Warsaw, died unexpectedly at home on Saturday, June 16, 2012.
He was born in Columbia City on Aug. 30, 1954, son of Walter and Phyllis Mitchell, and graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1973.
Kevin worked as a Raymond Hoist driver at R. R. Donnelly in Warsaw, where he was employed for 39 years.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Bev; son, Andrew Mitchell of Winona Lake; sister, Kathy (Mitchell) Ackley, Columbia City; brother, Jim Mitchell, Upland, Calif. and grandson, Issiac Mitchell, Winona Lake.

Oneita Young, 68

June 18, 2012

Oneita J. Young, 68, a resident of rural Churubusco and wife of David L. Young, died at 2:15 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Young was born in Wolf Lake on Dec. 1, 1943, a daughter of Archie A. and Arrena (Leitch) Weidman.
Survivors include her husband David, her mother, one daughter, one brother, one sister, one stepbrother and one stepsister and four grandchildren.

Stephen Abshire, 65

June 18, 2012

Stephen J. Abshire, 65, a resident of Columbia City and formerly of Churubusco, passed away at 3:14 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He had been seriously ill since last August.
Mr. Abshire was born March 28, 1947, in Bloomington, a son of Roy E. and Dorthea L. (Stagg) Abshire and spent part of his formative years in Brown County. He moved to Tipton as a teenager and graduated from Tipton High School in 1966.

Marshall Smith, 85

Marshall A. “Smitty” Smith, 85, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Peabody Retirement Center, North Manchester.
Born March 20, 1927, in Whitley County, he was the son of Lewis and Maude Martha (Kneller) Smith.
He attended the public school system and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In 1954, he married Barbara L. (Hire) Smith. A lifetime Whitley County resident and part-time farmer, he owned Smitty’s Auto Parts since 1985 and also worked for General Electric for 20 years. Smitty, a “tinkerer,” loved to create things with wood and metal.

Adrian R. Beers, 89

June 15, 2012

Adrian R. Beers, 89, of Columbia City, died at 4:40 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted on Wednesday.
He was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Etna Township, a son of Keslar R. and Nellie R. (Dobbin) Beers. He graduated from Larwill High School in 1940.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 8, 1942, serving during World War II. Following his discharge on Nov. 7, 1945, he returned to his employment in Crestline, Ohio with the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Hugh Henry, 96

Hugh S. Henry, 96, of West Lafayette, Ind, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Indiana University Health.
He was born June 17, 1915, in Vanderburg, County, Ind., to the late Robert and Mayme Henry.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Henry, three daughters, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Dr. Philip Klinger will be officiating. Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.

Ned Beekman, 84

Ned E. Beekman, 84, of Columbia City, died at 3:53 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Parkview Oaks in Columbia City.
Ned was born on June 7, 1928, in Lancaster Township, Huntington County, and is the son of Ernest and Avis (McDaniels) Beekman.
He graduated in 1946, from Clear Creek High School and attended one year at Purdue University.
Ned married Shirley Callahan on Aug.10, 1975, in Huntington.
She preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 1995.

Edith Hershman, 9

Edith Lelia Hershman, 94, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:54 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born Sept. 1, 1917, in Cincinnatti, Ohio, she was the daughter of Fred and Ida (Mullholland) Miess.
She graduated from Emerson High School in Gary with the class of 1935 and attended Wheaton College for two years.
On April 11, 1948, she married Lawrence W. Hershman in Crown Point where they established their home.
