Stephen J. Abshire, 65, a resident of Columbia City and formerly of Churubusco, passed away at 3:14 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He had been seriously ill since last August.
Mr. Abshire was born March 28, 1947, in Bloomington, a son of Roy E. and Dorthea L. (Stagg) Abshire and spent part of his formative years in Brown County. He moved to Tipton as a teenager and graduated from Tipton High School in 1966.
Marshall A. â€śSmittyâ€ť Smith, 85, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at Peabody Retirement Center, North Manchester.
Born March 20, 1927, in Whitley County, he was the son of Lewis and Maude Martha (Kneller) Smith.
He attended the public school system and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In 1954, he married Barbara L. (Hire) Smith. A lifetime Whitley County resident and part-time farmer, he owned Smittyâ€™s Auto Parts since 1985 and also worked for General Electric for 20 years. Smitty, a â€śtinkerer,â€ť loved to create things with wood and metal.
Adrian R. Beers, 89, of Columbia City, died at 4:40 a.m. Friday, June 15, 2012, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted on Wednesday.
He was born Sept. 23, 1922, in Etna Township, a son of Keslar R. and Nellie R. (Dobbin) Beers. He graduated from Larwill High School in 1940.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 8, 1942, serving during World War II. Following his discharge on Nov. 7, 1945, he returned to his employment in Crestline, Ohio with the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Hugh S. Henry, 96, of West Lafayette, Ind, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Indiana University Health.
He was born June 17, 1915, in Vanderburg, County, Ind., to the late Robert and Mayme Henry.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Henry, three daughters, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel with the funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Dr. Philip Klinger will be officiating. Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
Ned E. Beekman, 84, of Columbia City, died at 3:53 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Parkview Oaks in Columbia City.
Ned was born on June 7, 1928, in Lancaster Township, Huntington County, and is the son of Ernest and Avis (McDaniels) Beekman.
He graduated in 1946, from Clear Creek High School and attended one year at Purdue University.
Ned married Shirley Callahan on Aug.10, 1975, in Huntington.
She preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 1995.
Edith Lelia Hershman, 94, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:54 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born Sept. 1, 1917, in Cincinnatti, Ohio, she was the daughter of Fred and Ida (Mullholland) Miess.
She graduated from Emerson High School in Gary with the class of 1935 and attended Wheaton College for two years.
On April 11, 1948, she married Lawrence W. Hershman in Crown Point where they established their home.
C.L. Boggs, 70, a lifelong resident of Etna Troy Township, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at his home of natural causes.
He was born April 28, 1942, in Etna, a son of Heber and Dortha E. (Beers) Boggs. He graduated from Larwill High School.
He worked at B.F. Goodrich, Harvester and Lynn Klingaman before beginning his employment with Essex, retiring from Dana PTG in 2005.
In October 1995, he married Penny A. Rodgers.
Janetta Crabill, 93, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Monday, June 11, 2012.
She was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Allen County, a daughter of Ira Edward and Iva Mae (Leland) Bowsman.
Her formative years were spent in Whitley County. She completed her education at Columbia City High School.
On Jan. 8, 1953, she was united in marriage to Oscar L. Crabill. They made their home in Columbia City until moving to Florida in 1954. From 1980 until 1995, they spent their summers in Columbia City. Mr. Crabill died Aug. 22, 1986.
James Strong, 64, of Churubusco, died at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born June 6, 1948, in Fort Wayne, a son of Cecil and LaVon (Disler) Strong.
His wife, Frances, and his father, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his mother, LaVon Strong, one brother, six stepchildren, one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, with Pastor Paul D. White officiating.
Jon Lynn Gaff, 54, of Columbia City, formally of Green Township, died at 6:10 a.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
Mr. Gaff was born on Aug. 16, 1957, in Columbia City, a son of J. Lincoln and Juanita (Decker) Gaff.
Survivors include mother, Juanita LaVon Gaff, of Columbia City, one daughter, one son and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and one nephew.
Funeral services will be held at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home on Saturday at 1 p.m., with Pastor Brad Fredrickson, officiating.
