Max Sheckler, 75

COLUMBIA CITY – Max Eugene Sheckler, 75, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:39 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at his home.
Born Dec. 27, 1935, in Columbia City, he was the son of Marshall Luther and Nellie (Engle) Sheckler.
A lifetime Columbia City resident, he attended Columbia City High School.
On March 31, 1956, he married Eunice Kincaid at the parsonage of Rev. Marion Shroyer, Columbia City.
He did general farming, was an auto mechanic and was also a punch press operator at LML Corporation, Columbia City for 40 years.

Lewann Carteaux, 73

FORT WAYNE — Lewann Carteaux, 73, of Fort Wayne, died on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Carteaux was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on July 25, 1938, to Lewis A. Musselman and Anne Louise (Schwartz) Musselman.
She graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne in 1956.
Mrs. Carteaux married Francis “Pete” Carteaux on Sept. 1, 1962, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. He survives in Fort Wayne.

Orval Fisher, 92

COLUMBIA CITY — Orval Ray Fisher, 92, of Columbia City, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born May 8, 1919 in Thorncreek Township, he was the son of Francis Warner and Lillian L. (Keirn) Fisher.
Orval spent his entire lifetime in the Columbia City area where he graduated from Columbia City High School with the class of 1939.
After graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Florence Grice, 88

PORT STANLEY, Ontario — Florence Kathryn “Kay” Grice, 88, of Port Stanley, Ontario and formerly of Columbia City, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011.
She was the beloved wife of the late Wm. Reid Grice, who preceded her in death in 2003.

Sheila Hammons, 33

Sheila M. Hammons, 33, of Columbia City, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Hospice Home, Fort Wayne where she was admitted Tuesday, Dec. 6.
She was born Sept. 11, 1978, in Whitley County, a daughter of Edward Arnold and Cheryl A. (Brandom) Hammons.
She completed her education at Columbia City Joint High School.
Her employment was with Subway.

Melba Kussmaul, 76

Melba Kussmaul, 76, of Warsaw, passed away Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at 7:30 a.m. in Grace Village Health Care, Winona Lake.
She was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Whitley County to Andrew and Mary (Bryant) Brookover.
She has lived in Kosciusko County since 1971. Melba married John Kussmaul on July 3, 1954 in Huntington.
Melba and John were the past owners of Jot-Em-Down Store (Barbee Lake) from 1971 to 2003. She was a member of the Salem Community Missionary Church. She was the president of the Women’s Circle at the church.

Jerry Young, 64

Jerry Lee Young, 64, died on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at his residence in Churubusco.
Mr. Young was born in Kendallville June 23, 1947, to the late Preston E. and Eva (Snyder) Young.
He graduated from Albion Jefferson High School in 1965 and Allied Institute of Technology in Chicago.
The Vietnam War was being fought and Jerry entered the U.S. Army, taking his basic training at Fort Leonardwood in Missouri.
After basic training, he came home to get married and took Barbara Ann Deck to be his bride on Dec. 31, 1966, in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ege.

Howard Ernst, 95

Howard A. Ernst, 95, of Columbia City, passed away peacefully at his residence at 7:05 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.
Born Nov. 4, 1916 in Sorento, Ill., he was the son of Donald and Grace (West) Ernst.
He grew up in Columbia City and on Nov. 24, 1967, he married Mantie Louise Collier in Columbia City.
For 20 years he worked at Weatherhead Company and owned and operated Ernst Restaurant and Ernst Painting, all of Columbia City. He attended Cornerstone Fellowship Church.

R. Duane Loe, 44

SOUTH WHITLEY — R. Duane Loe, 44, of South Whitley, passed away quietly at his home surrounded by his family at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. He had been fighting cancer.
He was born June 12, 1967, in Columbia City, a son of Raymond Duane Loe, Sr. and Linda (Snyder) Loe.
His formative years were spent in South Whitley. He graduated from Whitko High School.
Following his graduation, he went to work for the South Whitley Electric Department for seven years. He also became a member of the Cleveland Twp. Volunteer Fire Department.

Dixie Nei, 71

COLUMBIA CITY — Dixie Clingerman “Sis” Nei, 71, passed away at 8:12 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis surrounded in love with her daughters and grandchildren.
She had become suddenly ill at her home on Wednesday.
She was born July 27, 1940, in Columbia City, the daughter of William F. and Irene (Heintzelman) Clingerman.
She spent her childhood in the Ormas area and graduated from North Webster High School with the class of 1958.
However, most of her adult life was spent at TriLakes, except from 1980 to 1990 when she resided in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
