Karen Juanita Chaney, 65, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.
Born March 7, 1946 in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of William and Eva (Staley) Shumaker.
She was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church of Columbia City. She enjoyed crafting, sewing and scrapbooking, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Surviving are her husband Leland Chaney; daughters Rebecca (Kevin) Berning, Tina (Kevin) Biddle; brother William (Lorraine) Shumaker; four grandchildren, Nathan, Oliver and Lily Berning and Andrew Biddle.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Richard J. Yarnelle, 92, of South Whitley died peacefully at his home at 3:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011.
He was born Feb. 5, 1919 in Wabash, a son of the late George and Helen (DePuy) Yarnelle. His formative years were spent in Wabash where he graduated from Wabash High School in 1936.
A talented athlete, he earned a football scholarship to Purdue University. After being injured, he attended Butler University.
Richard A. Kreider, 44, of Warsaw, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 at his residence.
Born Dec. 19, 1966, he was the son of Richard H. and Delores Kreider.
He attended Whitko High School and graduated with the Class of 1985.
He worked at 80/20 in Columbia City.
A lifetime resident of Columbia City, he lived in Warsaw for the past year. He was an avid bowler and participated in a league.
Orren Albert Ware, 81, of Columbia City, passed away 4:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
Born May 27, 1930 in Huntington, he was the son of Albert E. and Martha May (Hartman) Ware.
Raised in Huntington County, he graduated with the Class of 1948 from Bippus High School.
On May 29, 1949 he married Deloris May Geeting in Whitley County where he and his wife established their home.
Willa M. King, 75, of Columbia City, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 at 11:30 p.m. at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor, Columbia City.
Born Sept. 2, 1935 in Breathitt, Ky., she was the daughter of Willie and Clara (Little) Young.
Her formative years were spent in Kentucky where she completed her education.
On Oct. 6, 1956, she married Darrell King at Springfield, Ill.
Marge Ann (Lagoe) Phillips, 56, of South Whitley, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2011, in Fort Wayne, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 29, 1954, in Herkimer, N.Y., she was the daughter of Richard and Patricia Lagoe of Sherburne, N.Y.
She was a homemaker and artist. She loved art, music, country life, her family and cats.
Marge was an intelligent, creative, sensitive person who brought living color to the gray world around her.
Bob Bowman, 75, passed away Monday, Aug. 15, 2011.
He was born March 5, 1936, in Hammond and graduated from Crown Point High School in 1954.
He saw much of the world while spending four years in the U.S. Navy as a musician and much later as a dance host on cruise ships.
He worked for NIPSCO for 33 years, first as a combination pipeline welder and then 26 years as a gas serviceman.
He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, Moose, VFW, and American Legion Post #296.
He said that any place that offered camaraderie, good food and drinks and a large dance floor was where he wanted to be.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Arliss J. Myers, 84, a resident of Columbia City, died at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 at her home in Columbia City.
She was born Feb. 8, 1927, in Columbia Township, Whitley County a daughter of John and Pauline (Miller) Perry.
Her formative years were spent in Columbia Township. She graduated from South Whitley High School in 1945.
On Jan. 15, 1946 she was united in marriage to Harold L. Myers. They made their home in Antwerp, Ohio until 1948 when they moved to a farm in Richland Township, Whitley County.
In 1953 they moved to their farm in Columbia Township.
Doris King, 86, a resident of Carmel and mother of Churubusco resident Jeanine Childs, passed away peacefully in her home at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. King was born Oct. 2, 1924 in Herrin, Ill. to the late James and Flora Armstrong Stubblefield.
Doris was a graduate of Asbury University and attended Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, KY.
She was a dedicated pastorâ€™s wife, and enjoyed flower gardening and taking care of her home and family.
Dorothy A. Calkins, 100, formerly of Indianapolis, died at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 at Lutheran Life Villages, Kendallville.
Born Oct. 25, 1910 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Carl Edward and Barbara H. (Miller) Schaffner.
On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Edwin F. Calkins, Sr. in Indianapolis.
She is survived by daughters, Barbara M. Gillman of Columbia City and Lois Andrews of Gallaway, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Janice Calkins of Leesburg, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
