Margaret Miller, 90

July 11, 2011

MERRIAM — Margaret M. Miller, 90, of Merriam, died at 1:40 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at her home.
She was born Sept. 15, 1920 in Mishawaka, a daughter of Austin E. and Jesse B. (Chamberlain) Miller.
On Aug. 9, 1938 she married William H. Miller, who died March 13, 1988.
Surviving relatives include four children, Harlen Miller of Albion, Kenlyn Miller of Albion, Deidre Bair of Churubusco and Alesia Geiger of Albion; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Welsey A. Miller and a sister, Catherine Guidi.

Shirley Dear, 75

Shirley A. Dear, 75, of Columbia City passed away at 7:49 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born April 24, 1936 in Whitley County, the daughter of Eldrige V. and Turah M. (Leininger) Brockup.
She attended Columbia City High School and worked at Chamberlin Products, South Whitley, Weatherhead, Ion Capacitor, Inc. and Alcoils all of Columbia City. However, she was best known as a great homemaker. She was married Jan. 13, 1953 in Etna Green to John Junior Dear.

Robert Gordon, 85

LARWILL — Robert Lee “Bob” Gordon, 85, of Larwill, was taken to be with his Lord at 11:35 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born April 25, 1926 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Carter) Gordon. His formative years were spent on a farm in the Collins area. He graduated from Churubusco High School in 1944.
On Dec. 22, 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving as a medic during World War II. He was honorably discharged Nov. 2, 1945.

Anna Fulk, 84

Anna Belle Fulk, 84, a resident of Kendallville, died at 10:30 a. m. Saturday, July 9, 2011, at her home.
She was born in Noble County Nov. 6, 1926. On July 10, 1945 she was married to Robert N. Fulk.
Mr. Fulk preceded her in death May 23, 2004.
The surviving relatives include two daughters Joy Rose of Albion and Connie Castor of Kendallville; a son Steven R. Fulk of Albion; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Milo “Buck” Rider.

Dr. Richard Minear, 84

COLUMBIA CITY — Dr. Richard L. Minear, 84, of Columbia City, died at 5:45 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident since March 2010.
He was born April 16, 1927 in Fort Wayne, a son of Ralph R. and Minnie K. (Mantz) Minear. He spent his lifetime in Columbia City, graduating from Columbia City High School.
He then graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis.
During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.
He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On June 26, 1949 he was united in marriage to Lois M. Braun.

Robert Poffenberger, 58

FORT WAYNE — Robert D. Poffenberger, 58, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born June 18, 1953 in Fort Wayne, a son of Robert E. and Lenore M. (Varner) Poffenberger.
With the exception of four years in Ligonier, he spent his formative years in Columbia City.
He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1971 and continued his education at Hillsdale College in Michigan.
He was employed at Monsanto for six years and Food Marketing Corp. for more than 25 years.

Thomas Davidsen, 85

Thomas Robert “Bud” Davidsen, 85, of Cromwell, died July 6, 2011 at 2:10 a.m. at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born May 12, 1926 to Thomas Martin and Alvena (Petersen) Davidsen in Kosciusko County.
He married Marjory Orcutt Feb. 2, 1951.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marjory, of Cromwell; five sons, Robert Davidsen of Jackson, Mich., Steven Davidsen of Indianapolis, James Davidsen of Noblesville, Michael Davidsen of Cromwell, Kevin Davidsen of Cromwell; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha Shaffer, 86

Martha K. Shaffer, 86, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:02 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011 at The Oaks in Columbia City.
Born Jan. 25, 1925 in New York City, she was the daughter of Ellsworth G. and Florence (Harris) Samo.
She attended Walton High School, New York City. On Feb. 28, 1947, she married James N. Shaffer in Towson, Md.
In 1947, she moved to Rochelle Park, N.J. where her five children were born.
Between 1963 and 1971, she lived in Ramsey, N.J., Verona, N.Y., Bettendorf, Iowa and Pittsburgh. She worked her adult life as a devoted housewife and loving mother.

Shirley Gumm, 74

COLUMBIA CITY — Shirley J. Gumm, 74, wife of Donald E. Gumm, a resident of Shriner Lake near Columbia City and formerly of Churubusco, passed away July 5, 2011 at 10:22 a.m., at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where she had been a patient since June 24.
Mrs. Gumm was born in Hampton, Ga. Dec. 17, 1936, a daughter of Esco and Fannie (Womac) Kent, and spent her formative years in Dalton, Ga.

Phillip Mattingly, 77

FORT WAYNE – Phillip E. Mattingly Sr., died at 8:20 p.m. July 5, 2011, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 7, 1934, to James and Eunice Mattingly in Lexington, Ky.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving relatives include his daughters Linda Wallace, Brenda Kay Berkes, Eunice Lyons, and Sarah Berkley; sisters Mary Brooks and Ollie Alford; 17 grandchildren and 37 great–grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his wife Alma Jo Mattingly, parents, a son, and a brother, James Mattingly.
