Ilene E. Baker, 97, a resident of rural Churubusco and widow of James A. â€śMikeâ€ť Baker, passed away peacefully at 11:05 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2010, at her home in Smith Township following an extended illness.
Mrs. Baker was born Dec. 25, 1912 in Smith Township, a daughter of James W. and Ollie (Yates) McGuire. She spent her formative years in the Churubusco-area, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1930.
Fran Pierce, 78, of Columbia City, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 at her home.
She was born March 21, 1932 in Arkansas, a daughter of John and Clemmie (Lumpkin) Petty. As a young girl, her family moved to Pendleton, Ind. She graduated from Pendleton High School.
On May 15, 1952 she was united in marriage to Norman N. Pierce. They made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Pierce died March 26, 1988.
She was employed in the guidance and business offices of Columbia City Joint High School, as well as the gift department of Keltsch Pharmacy and later Dorothyâ€™s Hallmark.
Jeffery L. Morris, 53, a resident of rural Churubusco, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Morris was born in Columbia City Sept. 25, 1957, the oldest son of Ronald E. and Marna (Smolek) Morris. He was a lifelong resident of the Churubusco community, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1976.
For the past 12 years he had been employed at Wal-Mart on Coldwater Road in Fort Wayne.
Robert B. Elliott, Sr., 96, a lifelong resident of Larwill, died at 12:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was born Dec. 13, 1913 in Larwill, a son of Bonnell and Lucy (Marchand) Elliott. He graduated from Larwill High School in 1931.
He operated the Elliott Service Station in Larwill from 1932 until 1981.
On Oct. 28, 1939 he was united in marriage to Esther Reeg. Mrs. Elliott died Aug. 25, 1984.
In Sept. 1943 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the European Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged Jan. 24, 1946.
Barbara S. Long, 60, of rural South Whitley, died at 1:55 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. She had been battling cancer since October 2008.
She was born Nov. 3, 1949 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Charles C. and Lucille V. (Smith) Fudge. Her formative years were spent in Allen County. She graduated from Churubusco High School and received her Registered Nursing degree from IPFW.
On Nov. 1, 1970 she was united in marriage to Daniel B. Long. They made their home in North Webster for a year before moving to their home southwest of South Whitley in 1971.
Joyce â€śMaxâ€ť Ummel, 70, Columbia City, died and went to his heavenly home at 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor, Columbia City, where he had been a resident for 17 years.
He was born July 31, 1940 in Elkhart County to Edward and Edith (Anglemyer) Ummel, where he was raised on a Holstein dairy farm until he was 18.
Kenneth Bruce Kline, 73, of Columbia City, died at 2:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at the Kingston Care Center, Fort Wayne.
He was born Nov. 27, 1936 in Coldwater, Mich., a son of Kenneth L. and Catherine Jean (Brokaw) Kline. He served in the U.S. Navy.
Surviving relatives include a sister, Mary Warrick and a brother, Robert Kline.
Ruth Leon Whiteman, 87, died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 at her home.
She was born May 11, 1923 in Kosciusko County, a child of Lela Mildred Atchison. Her formative years were spent in Pierceton where she completed her education in the Pierceton High School
On July 7, 1943, she was united in marriage to Henry â€śHankâ€ť L. Whiteman and they made their home in Columbia City, then moved to Kimmell.
Mr. Whiteman died Jan. 8, 1981 and since 2003, she has made her home in Columbia City. She was a homemaker.
Martha â€śMrs. Cecilâ€ť Land, 88, a resident of Fort Wayne and a native of Noble County, passed away at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
She was born in Merriam Nov. 5, 1921, a daughter of Nicholas and Etta May (Addis) Herron. She was united in marriage to Cecil M. Land.
The surviving relatives include a daughter, Golda Land; and a sister, Mary Jane Paulus.
Pauline H. â€śPollyâ€ť Brubaker, 95, of South Whitley, died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 at Peabody Home, North Manchester where she had been a resident since January 2007.
She was born Oct. 31, 1914 in Wells County, a daughter of Robert L. and Mary Sara (Milliken) Hatfield. She graduated from Ossian High School in 1932 and received her normal degree from Manchester College in 1936.
