Betty Jane Blaising, 86

March 10, 2014

Betty Jane “BJ” Blaising, 86, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014.
Born Nov. 6, 1927, in Fort Wayne, she was raised by her grandparents, Pearl Ethel Marker Keiser and Charles Marker. She is the daughter of the late Blanch M. Marker and Charles Hagen. She graduated from Edgerton High School in Ohio with the Class of 1944.
She retired from Allen County’s Printing Department where she worked 35 years in the print shop and composed more than 2,000 forms and printed many more. She worked for Fashion 220 and earned a company car.

Robert “Bob” McKinzie, 58

Robert L. “Bob” McKinzie Sr., 58, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at 11:52 p.m. when he tragically, yet heroically, lost his life in a fire that took over his Coesse home.
The fire also claimed the life of his son-in-law, Rick Niemann.
Bob was born June 19, 1955, in Seymour, to Ervin and Marjorie (Bush) McKinzie.
He attended Huntington North High School, Huntington. Bob served his country while in the U.S. Army.
On Sept. 1, 1973, he and Cherie Shively were married in Huntington. They had lived in Coesse for seven years coming from Warsaw.

Madelyn Walter, 96

March 7, 2014

Madelyn M. Walter, 96, of Columbia City, passed away peacefully at her son’s home Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 12:05 p.m. with her constant companion, her dog Nikki by her side.
She was born April 4, 1917, in Columbia City, a daughter of Cecil S. and Faith Aretha (Miller) Phend.
Her formative years were spent in Columbia City.
She graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1936. After graduating she began work at the former Blue Bell.

Gerald Maxwell, 88

March 6, 2014

Gerald Lee Maxwell 88, of rural Columbia City, died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he was admitted a week ago.
He was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Fort Wayne, a son of Franklin and Ethel (Leath) Maxwell.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Maxwell of Columbia City.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service Sunday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Union Township Cemetery.

Donald Rondeau, 78

Donald E. Rondeau, 78, a resident of Fort Wayne, died at 1:19 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Grey Stone Health and Rehabilitation, Fort Wayne, where he had been a resident since January.
He was born March 29, 1935, in Yale, Mich, a son of the late Arthur and Louella (Kaislia) Rondeau.
As a young child the family moved to Columbia City where he attended West Ward Grade School and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1953.
He was the athletic Honor Blanket recipient in 1953.

Donald Martin, 74

March 5, 2014

Donald “Don” Ray Martin, 52, of Columbia City, passed away at 12:56 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at his home.
Born May 12, 1961, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Gerald “Wink” E. and Melzina “Babe” (Rice) Martin, Sr.
Survivors include his wife of almost 30 years, two sons, five grandchildren, three sisters, one brother, and a sister-in-law.
A memorial gathering will be held Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with a memorial service starting at 4 p.m.

Gene Gallimore, 88

Otho Eugene “Gene” Gallimore, 88, a resident near Big Lake, died at 3:50 a.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City.
He was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Mendon, Ohio, a son of the late Edwin S. and Alice (Metz) Gallimore.
Surviving include two daughters, a stepdaughter, three stepsons, 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son, Brent Eugene Gallimore, five brothers and four sisters.

James Busz, 74

March 4, 2014

James E. Busz, 74 of Pierceton, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, in his residence.
On May 2, 1939, he was born in Pierceton to Thurman and Nellie (Birtwhistle) Busz.
He was united in marriage to Janice Kay Staley May 6, 1960, in Columbia City. She preceded him in death April 2, 2012.
A lifetime resident of Pierceton, James had worked for Dana/Weatherhead, Syracuse, for 30 years as a quality inspector.

Elizabeth Karolyi, 89

March 3, 2014

Elizabeth Karolyi, 89, of Columbia City, died March 1, 2014, at The Oaks in Columbia City. Born Oct. 18, 1924, in Budapest, Hungary to Peter & Rose (Mohachi) Karolyi.
She graduated from Payne High School in Ohio and Skadron Business College in Fort Wayne. She moved to Texas in 1947 and returned to the Columbia City area in 2007.
Survivors include two sisters, Clara Burgoon of Payne, Ohio and Helen Hoy of Warsaw; and a brother, Arthur Michael (Monna) Karolyi of Fort Wayne.

Laddie Slavicek, 80

Laddie L. “Ladd” Slavicek, 80, died at 10:44 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, after becoming suddenly ill at his residence.
He was born in St. Joseph, Mich. May 17, 1933, the son of Anton and Anna (Josek) Slavicek.
Ladd grew up in a large family in the St. Joseph area graduated from St. Joseph High School with the Class of 1951, where he played football and basketball.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War.
He married Jeannine J. Swank March 26, 1966, at St. Joseph Trinity Lutheran Church.
