Fae Elizabeth Carter, 92, of Columbia City, widow of Ralph B. Carter, Sr., passed away at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City. She had been a patient there for the past two years.
Mrs. Carter was born in Fort Wayne April 27, 1920, a daughter of Ruben Clyde and Veronica Elizabeth (Ness) Butler, Sr., and spent her formative years in the Arcola area. On March 11, 1937, she was married in Warsaw to Ralph B. Carter, Sr. She had lived at Blue Lake for a period and had also resided in Gainsville, Fa.
March 25th
Carey D. Landis, 101, of Mentone, died at 12:55 a.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor of Wabash.
He was born Nov. 18, 1911, in Kosciusko County to John and Sadie (Dirck) Landis.
He was married to Jessie F. Thomas Aug. 1, 1953, in Winona Lake. She preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1979.
Carey had been a school bus driver for Talma School, as well as a carpenter and an electrician. He worked at the hardware store in Mentone and farmed in his early years.
Robert “Bob” David Stanley, 86, of Columbia City, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Parkview Oaks, Columbia City.
Born Dec. 15, 1926, in Arcola, he was the son of Roy Cuppy Stanley and Ruth B. (Besson) Stanley.
He was a graduate of Washington Center High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy.
Onita Jean McSurley, 84, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 6:10 a.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw.
Onita was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Dwale, Ky. to Jack and Emma (Ellis) Osborne. She and Loni McSurley were married Jan. 21, 1946, in Prestonsburg, Ky.
However, Onita lived most of her life in Kosciusko County. She was a packer for R.R. Donnelley and Sons Co. for 23 years before retiring in 1990.
March 22nd
Darrell Eugene Leap, 92, of Columbia City, passed away March 21, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 18, 1920, in Cicero, he was the son of Lester and Nellie (Newby) Leap.
He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. On Oct. 5, 1939, he married, Geneva Sylvester in Greenfield. He was the owner of Leap Excavating and lived in North Webster from 1952-1968, Knapp Lake from 1968-2004 and has lived in Columbia City since 2004.
Betty L. Hodges, 89, a resident of rural South Whitley, died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday March 21, 2013, at the home of her daughter. She had been in failing health.
She was born May 10, 1923, in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Leo F. and Axie E. (Cross) Landis.
Her formative years were spent in north central Indiana. She graduated from Larwill High School in 1941.
On June 1, 1941, she was united in marriage to George E. Hodges. They made their home in on a farm in rural South Whitley. Mr. Hodges died Nov. 27, 1995.
March 21st
Carl W DeYoung, 84, formerly of Corunna, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at his home in Waterloo.
He was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Crystal, Mich. His parents were George and Dorothy (Doyle) DeYoung and he was raised by William and Pearl Thompson.
Carl was a graduate of Ashley High School, a U.S. Army Reservist, former Waterloo Volunteer Fireman and a member of Corunna Church of Christ. He loved to golf, bowl, fish and was a big IU basketball fan.
He worked for Indiana Decorative, Charleston Metal and Kitchen Quip of Waterloo before retiring in 1979.
March 20th
Bernetta Seifert Welling, 74, departed this life to be present with Christ (II Corinthians 5:8) Monday, March 18, 2013, at 7:17 p.m. at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne where she was admitted Tuesday, March 12.
She was born Nov. 2, 1938, near Wind Ridge, Pa. to Charles and Dorothy (Hartley) Seifert and raised by her grandparents, Wilford and Louella Hartley. Her formative years were spent in Greene County, Pa., graduating from West Greene High School, Rogersville, Pa.
Phil L. Glassley, 93, of Columbia City, and formerly of South Whitley, passed away Friday, March 15, 2013 at The Oaks, Columbia City.
Born on Aug. 23, 1919 in South Whitley, he was the son of Russell and Winifred (Shriver) Glassley. He graduated from South Whitley High School in 1937. He married Eulah Mae Hornaday July 4, 1939. She passed away April 19, 1973.
He married Peggy L. (Rex) Glassley Oct. 13, 1973. They lived in South Whitley until 1980 when they moved to Tri-Lakes. In 1998 they moved to their present home in Columbia City. Peggy passed away Dec. 2, 2012.
Phyllis J. Monesmith, 76, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
Born in LaGrange County, Phyllis worked with Dana Corporation in Churubusco for 29 years, retiring in 1997. Her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her number one priority. She loved antique collecting and old-time county music.
