Three seasons after appearing in the 2007 class A semistate championship and tying a school best 11-3 record, it’s hard to believe Churubusco football has actually had a better year in 2010.
The small school of 423 students has seen a revival of its football program as of late. The Eagles are in the midst of their sixth consecutive winning season and second semistate appearance in four years Friday night when they travel to No. 1 Lafayette Central Catholic.
COLUMBIA CITY — The coach shuffle was in motion as area high school and middle school coaches were accepting and resigning from jobs at the Whitley County Consolidated Schools board meeting Monday night.
The Columbia City wrestling program’s two-week search for a head coach ended with assistant coach Blain Culp getting the job.
In the Oct. 18 board meeting, Culp was approved as an assistant coach for the Eagles. At the same time then head coach Jeff Slain turned in his resignation.

CHURUBUSCO — “This is what you have to do in the big games,” Kyle Mathewson said.
The words that said it all in Churubusco Friday night as the Eagles handed an undefeated Hagerstown team its first loss in the class A regional championship. The crown won ’Busco a match-up with the No. 1 team in class A football next week at Lafayette Central Catholic.
Exactly what the Eagles did was repeat the steps of the 2007 when current Churubusco seniors, as freshmen also won a regional title.
