’Cats smother Pilgrims 59-41

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s Wildcats had to turn up the pressure Wednesday night on non-conference foe Plymouth in order to put the varsity contest out of reach early en route to a decisive 59-41 win over the Pilgrims.
   It was a lesson learned from the team’s previous contest against Three Rivers Conference Tippecanoe Valley.

Big 3rd quarter lifts Warriors past Eagles

COLUMBIA CITY — This was obviously not the sort of early Christmas present the Columbia City Eagle boys’ basketball team was looking for.
The visiting Wawasee Warriors got out early and then used a big third quarter to hand the host Eagles a 66-48 loss Tuesday night.
The Eagles trailed 38-31 at halftime, but the visiting Warriors went on a 17-4 run in the third quarter to put the Eagles in a 55-35 hole.
“They (Wawasee) are a difficult team to play against when coming from behind,” Columbia City Coach Chris Benedict said.

City opens NHC in right direction

   COLUMBIA CITY — Sometimes winning championships are just as simple as winning the game itself.
   “Keep it simple,” Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict said to his team before the game. “Everyone wants to talk about ‘how do you win a conference championship?’
   “Win your conference games. It sounds simple but that’s it.”

Trio of Eagles keep ’Busco perfect in NECC

   CHURUBUSCO — Three Churubusco Eagles worked to score double digits on Friday night against the Prairie Heights Panthers to pull out a 73-58 win.
   Tyler Arrowsmith, Hunter Nicodemus, and Jordan Turner combined for a total of 36 points, giving the Eagles their second conference win.
   Both Prairie Heights and ’Busco came into the game with a two-game win streak.

Senior night honors ’Busco’s undefeated wrestling duo

   CHURUBUSCO — They may stand as only two wrestlers on a team of 30 but Churubusco’s Braxton Siddons and Zack Armstead provide the talent and leadership of a majority.
   “They really grew into their role as leaders this year,” Churubusco head coach Sam Riesen said. “They weren’t very vocal when they came up but they really have stepped up as vocal leaders and come along   to lead the team emotionally.”

Second-half spurt lifts ’Cats

   LIGONIER — The Lady Wildcats knew that in order to win against West Noble, they had to shut down two players. And that they did.
   Thursday, a road trip for Whitko girls’ basketball had the ’Cats taking down the Lady Chargers on their home court 51-34.
   The Lady ’Cats knew they had to adjust their defense to the talent of West Noble’s Haley Richardson and Ashley Shepherd.
   “We really tried to focus on them,” Whitko head coach Rob Bell said.

City swimming gets pair of wins

   BLUFFTON — The wins keep coming for Columbia City swimming.
   Back on the road this week, the City swimmers traveled to Bluffton coming away with two victories. The Lady Eagles topped the Lady Tigers 100-83 while the boys’ won 104-82.
   Six wins in all helped the girls squad on their way to victory.
   Two Lady Eagles grabbed multiple wins on the evening.
   Jena Bosselman took to the pool for her two usual events winning both the 100-meter breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

City grapples first NHC win

   OSSIAN — Two new faces in the lineup helped Columbia City head wrestling coach Blain Culp more than he could have expected Thursday night.
   On the road in the Northeast Hoosier Conference, Columbia City wrestling took to the mat in search of their first conference win at Norwell.
   After being down 27-0, the Eagles used wins from Brandon Ray and Tyler Olsen, who in their first matches of the season rallied Columbia City to a 40-31 victory.

Conference match-ups fill weekend

December 16, 2010

   With the holiday a little over one week away, area Indiana high school basketball teams are getting in their final games before break.
   Tournaments and showcases fill the schedule for the last week of 2010 but Friday and Saturday serve as one of the final jam-packed weekends until the new year.
   Adding to six games in two days between the six county teams, all come in important conference match-ups whether its in the Northeast Hoosier Conference, North East Corner Conference or Three Rivers  Conference.

Churubusco wrestler improving with every match

   LAGRANGE — Despite an 8-6 record for the season, Churubusco wrestling has had two seniors remain perfect.
   After a 58-24 win at Lakeland Tuesday night, the Eagle seniors improved to 28-0 for the season.
   Seniors Braxton Siddons and Zack Armstead both took pinfall wins against the Lakers proving their leadership this season, according to head coach Sam Riesen.
