FORT WAYNE — It was a good day for a run Saturday and a good place to do it for local high school cross country teams.
New Haven played host to one of the last regular season invitational competitions at The Plex in Fort Wayne.
More than 50 teams competed within two divisions in both girls and boys. Among those were all three Whitley County schools.
Running the same course that will be set for semistate in just under a month, local teams got an early test.

COLUMBIA CITY — Something had to give. It was either going to be Columbia City’s string of Homecoming wins or New Haven’s undefeated record. In the marquee match up in the Northeast Hoosier Conference, two surprising teams brought solid records into Friday night’s contest at Max Gandy Athletic Field.
LIGONIER — The North East Corner Conference is no longer sleeping on West Noble. Neither is Churubusco.

WABASH–– After four Three Rivers Conference games, Whitko continued to hold onto its undefeated record in the TRC Friday night taking out the Northfield Norsemen, and improving their record to 5-1 overall.
The ‘Cats continued to rely on their defense to hold Northfield to only two touchdowns and Whitko quarterback Alex Stoddard led the offense to five touchdowns on the night, with a final score of 35-14.
Whitko’s offense set the pace for the game, bringing in two first-quarter touchdowns.
COLUMBIA CITY — Each season has been better and each season has been closer in the pursuit of a title.
Thursday, one match decided the Northeast Hoosier Conference for boys’ tennis. Finishing second for the past two seasons, Columbia City (14-4, 5-2 in the NHC) has always been in contention for the Northeast Hoosier Conference’s top spot but unable to clear the final obstacle in long time powerhouse No. 20 Homestead.
CHURUBUSCO — It was a cross-county battle Thursday night when the Whitko Lady Wildcats traveled up State Road 205 to take on the Churubusco Lady Eagles.
The Lady ‘Cats were victorious in three matches, but it wasn’t easy 25-17, 25-7, 25-18.
“It was nice to battle and watch some really aggressive volleyball,” ‘Busco head coach Trinda Goings said.
The first game was a tight match until Whitko scored six unanswered points to end the game at 25-18.
NEW HAVEN — The Columbia City (8-4) volleyball team was on the road in the Northeast Hoosier Conference Thursday looking to keep its unblemished record within the conference intact.
The Lady Eagles needed only three games to do so with a comfortable win over the Lady Bulldogs 25-17, 25-13, 25-21.
The win improves Columbia City’s record to 3-0 in the NHC conference with DeKalb, East Noble, Carroll and Bellmont remaining on the schedule.
