No. 5 Eagles tame Panthers

   CHURUBUSCO — Friday night’s Northeast Corner Conference football match-up between the         Churubusco Eagles and the Prairie Heights Panthers was clearly a case of the “haves” versus the “have nots”.
   Churubusco entered the contest “having” scored 90 points in its first two games, and “having” only given up seven points in the same two contests.

Eagles shut out Manchester 4-0

   MANCHESTER — Coming off their first loss in the Northeast Hoosier Conference Tuesday, the Eagles soccer team looked to bounce back on the road at Manchester.
   Thursday, Columbia City prevented a losing streak and got back to winning shutting out the Squires 4-0.
   As visitors, the Eagles didn’t take long to gain a sizable lead scoring three goals in the first half.
   Sophomore Sam Wight broke a scoreless game on an assist from Grant Wood to put Columbia City up 1-0.

Eagles pack fills top 10, edged by South Side

   FORT WAYNE — Just as Eagles fly in a flock, the Columbia City cross country team flew in a pack Thursday at the Wayne Invitational.
   The boys’ team ran in a tight pack placing five Eagles in the top 10.
   Finishing within 30 seconds of one another, Brendon Zoltek led the pack in third while the rest followed: Evan Harney fifth, Adam Bernhard sixth, Trevor Maggart seventh, David Potter 10th.

Hanging with the Cadets

    COLUMBIA CITY — There are times when you can take something positive out of a loss. That was the case Thursday night when the Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball team played host to the highly regarded Concordia Cadets.
    The Lady Eagles played a solid game sticking with the Cadets in each game before falling in three sets 21-25, 19-25, 21-25 at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium.
    In game one the Lady Eagles matched the Cadets point for point in the early going.

    COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball squad played host Tuesday night to cross-county rival Churubusco at the Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium.
    Columbia City shook off a sluggish first half in the opening game to close out the visitors in dominating fashion with a 25-18, 25-10, 25-16 three-game sweep.
    After Columbia City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one, several CC errors, including two service errors and a net violation eventually let ’Busco pull even at 11-11.

Spartans prove superior in NHC, beat CC 5-0

   COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Lady Eagle soccer team hosted a hard-nosed back-and-forth battle Tuesday night against Northeast Hoosier Conference’s power Homestead (5-1).
   Unfortunately, their efforts fell short in a 5-0 loss to the Lady Spartans.
   The first half began with a strong effort from the Lady Eagles, keeping the Spartans from scoring for most of the first half.
   The two conference foes battled it out in the middle of the field with neither team allowing the other a shot on goal.

City opens big week with win

   LIGONIER — Anytime you have a conference match it’s important.
   For Columbia City boys’ tennis, it makes this week a big one with a dual match against Norwell Thursday followed by a Wawasee Invitational where the Eagles are looking to defend their title.

Homestead ground Eagles 4-2

    CC senior Grant Wood catches air while on the attack in the first half of the Eagles game at Homestead Tuesday night. Columbia City stood toe-to-toe with the Spartans for nearly the entire first half tied 1-1. Two goals with under four minutes left in the first half put Homestead up 3-1 before going on to beat Columbia City 4-2. Senior Devin Rice scored a goal in each half of the Eagles loss that drops them to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NHC.

Whitko golf edged by West Noble, Manchester
   The Whitko girls’ golf team was on the road Tuesday night for a three-way golf match at South Shore Golf Course in Syracuse.
   The Lady Wildcats finished third on the night by two strokes falling to West Noble 226-228. Manchester won the night with a score of 206.
   Whitko scores included: Taylor Snavley 45, Chloe Nestel 54, Taylor Pottenger 60, Emily Weigold 70, Hannah Himes 69.

ANGOLA — Columbia City’s volleyball team held on for a five-game win Wednesday night at Angola....
WHITLEY COUNTY — Area football teams are taking a final day of preparation before the season opens...
The Columbia City Church of the Nazarene Alpha team won the Church League Softball championship...
