Lady Eagles fall to Adams Central

November 30, 2011

CHURUBUSCO — The Lady Eagles girls basketball team provided Adams Central its first win of the season Tuesday, losing to the visiting Lady Jets, 44-34.
Two of Adams Central three leading scorers, Olivia Macklin and Jenae Blackburn, hit early jumpers to give the Lady Jets a 5-0 lead to start the game.
According to Churubusco Head Coach Jamie Perlich, the team’s lack of readiness was apparent from tip-off.
“We didn’t come out focused. We had a good practice last night and we didn’t carry that over. We started out flat,” Perlich said.

Columbia City boys basketball falls to Warsaw

November 28, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Warsaw proved that even the best of teams can be beaten.
Columbia City, ranked in the Associated Press and Indiana Coaches Association polls, as well as semi-state qualifier last season, was taken down by the Tigers Saturday night.
The Eagles’ 28-17 lead in the second quarter turned into a four-point loss, 63-59, in Columbia City’s home-opener.
“The good news is, we’re pretty good. The bad news is, (we think) we’re pretty good,” Columbia City Head Coach Chris Benedict said. “We let them back in the game and it deflated our momentum. It’s frustrating.”

November 25, 2011

Lady Eagle basketball moved to 2-4 Friday, hosting and defeating Eastside, 47-32.
It was ‘Busco’s first win in three games.
Aggressive play by the defense set the tone early in the game.
The Lady Blazers managed just two field goal attempts in the first quarter; in the opening three minutes of the game and the second attempt was not made until there were two seconds left in the period.
However, it was not the quickest start for the Lady Eagles offense either.

Whitko falls to Elkhart, 52-28

November 21, 2011

SOUTH WHITLEY — There are plenty of teams that would be disappointed with a 24-point loss.
Whitko Girls Head Coach Brandon Bradley, on the other hand, is content with the way the team played against a tough Elkhart Memorial Saturday.
Though the 52-28 loss may appear bad, the Lady Wildcats lost to the Lady Chargers by 46 points last season (79-33).
Bradley is happy with the team’s effort.
“That’s the absolute best they could’ve played,” Bradley said.

Fathers know best

November 17, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — Many fathers enjoy going out to the backyard and tossing around a baseball or going to the gym to shoot hoops.
But for Whitko Head Coach Rob Irwin and Columbia City Head Coach Chris Benedict, its drastically different.
Both Benedict and Irwin are coaching stand-out players — who also happen to be their sons.
While many players face the typical suggestions from their fathers, Drew Benedict and Logan Irwin get quite a bit more.

November 14, 2011

CHURUBUSCO — Following an emotional loss to Columbia City Friday night, Whitko’s girls basketball team responded with a win against the county’s other Lady Eagles, Churubusco.

“It’s tough to play two county rivals back-to-back like that,” Whitko Head Coach Brandon Bradley said. “There’s always a fear of a let down after last (Friday) night’s loss.”

The Lady Wildcats traveled to ’Busco Saturday and won 56-37.

Olinske had 17 points — and Bradley is happy with her progress.
