Col. City handed second loss of the season by Homestead

HUNTERTOWN — In last year’s sectional title game against Wawasee, Columbia City’s boys basketball team fell to a 10-0 deficit in the first quarter but came back to win the title 67-66
The Eagles didn’t have the same luck in Friday’s holiday shoot-out championship game against Homestead.
The Spartans jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter and Columbia City never recovered, picking up its second loss of the season, 63-45.
“It was disappointing to come out to a team that we knew was going to be good and not put our best foot forward,” Columbia City Head Coach Chris Benedict said.

Whitko wins Peru tourney

PERU — Guaranteed to at least match the girls’ second place finish, Whitko boys basketball took the court Friday in the final game of Peru’s Holiday Tournament.
The Wildcats faced, and beat, the LaVille Lancers by a final of 64-55.
The half ended with a difference of just one point, 26-25 in favor of LaVille. At the break, Logan Irwin had 13 of his team leading 34 points.
Though keeping the score close, the Wildcats were just 7-for-29 in the first half (.241).
In the third quarter, following the fifth tie of the game (29), the Lancers scored 11 of the next 14 points.

Whitko advances to championship

PERU — Both Whitko’s boys and girls basketball teams are advancing to the championship games at the Peru tournament tonight.
The girls won the tournament last season and are looking to do the same this year after a 69-48 win over LaVille Thursday night.
The Lady Wildcats (5-6) face host Peru (4-7) tonight in the championship game at 6 p.m.
The boys picked up their second win of the season Thursday against Peru, 66-50.
Logan Irwin had six 3-pointers in his 34 points.

Eagles undefeated in holiday tourney

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys basketball team combined for 149 points in two games Thursday at its holiday shoot-out.
Columbia City’s gym hosted six games between six schools and the Eagles finished the day undefeated, beating Prairie Heights and East Noble.
The hosts beat Prairie Heights by 71 points, scoring 94 and holding the 2-7 Panthers to 23 points.
The Eagles had a 50-15 lead at halftime.
Drew Benedict and Drew Burnsworth combined for five 3-pointers in the first half, eight on the game and 16 on the day.

Lady Eagles fall to Homestead, beat Andrean

MIDDLEBURY — Col-umbia City’s girls basketball team finished its holiday tournament at Northridge Wednesday with a win over Andrean and a loss to Homestead.
The Lady Eagles started the day against the 0-12 Andrean 59ers, winning 61-15 over a young team.
“They had a lot of girls decide not to play at the last minute,” Columbia City Head Coach Amy Shearer said. “They’re playing a lot of young girls and they’re working hard.”

’Busco grapplers compete at invitational

COLUMBIA CITY — Churubusco wrestling had a strong showing Friday, competing with 15 other teams at the John McKee Invitational held at Rochester High School.
Heading into the finals, Churubusco stood in second place with 175.5 points.
The meet consisted of 14 individual wrestler brackets based on weight class. In the 106 and 113-pound weight class, ‘Busco was forced to forfeit in both the championship and wrestleback brackets.
Eagle Chase Downing, who came in as the fourth seed in the 120-pound class, earned a victory by way of forfeit, moving on to the quarter-final round.

Columbia City boys swim wins again

OSSIAN — Columbia City boys and girls swim teams visited Norwell High School Tuesday and came away with mixed results.
The boys team remains unbeaten in dual meets, winning by a score of 96-81.
The girls fell to the Lady Knights, 97-83.
For the boys, Brandon Davis, Kyle Mertz, Devin Moore and Logan Woollweever finished less than four seconds behind the first came in 200-yard medley team at 2:01.18.
Another Eagle team took fourth. Nathan Koch, Carson Miller, Robert Owen and Jacob Weber combined for a time of 2:17.33.

Wildcats defeated by No. 8 Plymouth

PLYMOUTH — The Pilgrims defended their brand-new Class 3A No. 8 ranking in convincing fashion against Whitko Wednesday.
Fresh from earning its first slot in the AP polls in three seasons, Plymouth used a 24-9 second quarter to coast to a comfortable 69-44 win over the visiting Wildcats at The Rock.
After the Pilgrims’ big second quarter, an 18-7 run by Whitko spanning 6:07 from midway through the third to the start of the fourth frame cut Plymouth’s lead to 13 at 50-37.
But the Wildcats never got any closer.

Columbia City girls handed 58-41 loss by Concordia

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls basketball team suffered its fourth consecutive loss to Concordia.
The Lady Eagles’ two-point lead at the end of the first quarter turned into a 17-point loss on their home court Wednesday night.
“That first quarter was the best first quarter we’ve played,” Columbia City Head Coach Amy Shearer said.
The Lady Cadets, who are ranked fourth in Class 3A by the Associated Press, outscored Columbia City 23-7 in the second quarter to take the lead — and never looked back.

Columbia City boys down Wawasee

December 21, 2011

SYRACUSE — Columbia City Head Basketball Coach Chris Benedict went into Tuesday night’s game at Wawasee without having lost a game there since 2004.
That didn’t change Tuesday, with the Eagles beating the Warriors 73-64 on their home court.
Last year Columbia City won two sectional games in Syracuse, the beginning of the team’s semi-state appearance.
The game was filled with double-digit lead changes and the biggest point spread came in the final minute, after six Eagle free throws; neither team was going down without a fight.
