Season Preview: City reloads for shot at history

   Half a point is all that separated Columbia City girls’ track and field from history in 2009.
   Coming off a dominating sectional championship in 2010, the Lady Eagles are setting out for another shot at history.
   “We want to win, for the first time ever, two sectionals back-to-back,” Columbia City head coach Bob Fahl said. “We’ve never done it and we’ve got the right group to be able to do that.”

First rodeo: Young Eagles prep for regional debut

   Experience and veteran leadership usually reigns supreme in the Indiana high school basketball postseason.
   Columbia City (17-5) have defied those notions with a sophomore-loaded team that makes its regional debut Saturday’s class 3A tournament at Blackford High School.
   Three of Columbia City’s top four scorers are sophomores including its top two in Drew Benedict (17.0 ppg) and Derek Hinen (8.7 ppg).

The Columbia City Lady Eagles basketball team wrapped up the season with its annual banquet this week. Four players were awarded for helping lead their team to a 12-10 record. From left, senior Kayla Dunn (second-team All-NHC, most steals at 55, defensive award), senior Sierria Burlage (first-team All-NHC, best field goal percentage at 51, most rebounds at 153), senior Maddie Hinen (best free throw percentage at 84.8 and Lady Eagle Integrity Award), junior Sarah Opliger (most assists at 66).
