Columbia City opens season with clean sweep

   OSSIAN — It was a clean sweep to open the season for the Columbia City girls’ tennis team.
   On the road for not only the season opener, the Lady Eagles squared off in their first Northeast Hoosier Conference match at Norwell.
   Taking each match in two sets, Columbia City swept the Lady Knights 5-0 to open the season 1-0.

’Busco edged in pitcher’s dual

   CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s Lady Eagles softball fell short by one run in their season opener against Fairfield Tuesday night.
   Despite their home-field advantage, the young Lady Eagles lost a pitcher’s dual 2-1 to the Lady Falcons.

Falcons bats double Eagles 12-6

Churubusco senior pitcher Dylan Herendeen delivers from the mound during the Eagles 12-6 home loss to Fairfield Tuesday. ’Busco posted six runs on 15 hits but allowed allowed nine earned runs and struggled in the field with six errors. Darin Hochsteler led the Fairfield attack with three home runs in the game.

CC volleyball wins at home

Columbia City boys’ volleyball club libero Devin Moore returns a serve Tuesday at home. Moore and the Eagles won 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 over Wapahani Raiders.

Hazelet continues family tradition at next level

   COLUMBIA CITY — Two golfers named Hazelet have gone through Columbia City girls’ golf and two have now moved on to the collegiate level.
   Monday, Columbia City senior Rachel Hazelet followed the same path as her older sister. Hazelet signed  her letter of intent to play women’s golf at the University of Saint Francis.
   As a Lady Eagle senior, Hazelet served as head coach Jim Thompson’s No. 1 golfer and example for his future golfers.

Errors plague Eagles opener at Concordia

   FORT WAYNE — Saturday’s baseball game between the Columbia City Eagles and the Concordia Cadets was definitely not the season home-opener that new Columbia City head coach Zac Bireley had  hoped for.  
   First of all, wet conditions on the Columbia City field forced a move to Concordia’s field at Zollner Field.  Second, seven Columbia City errors led to a 9-2 loss to the Cadets.

’Busco digs out another win 4-3

   CHURUBUSCO — A year ago at this time Churubusco baseball was off to an 0-5 start and wondering when its’ first win was going to ever come.
   Two games into the 2011 season, the Eagles have reversed their fortunes remaining undefeated heading into Thursday.
   One of those five consecutive losses from last season came from Oak Hill.
   The Eagles starting pitcher Ryan Farlow remembers it well. Farlow gave up four runs and six hits in a 6-3 loss to the Golden Eagles.

Bailey joins YMCA as aquatics head

   COLUMBIA CITY — The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne and the Whitley County Family YMCA welcomed    Kameron Bailey as the new Sports and Aquatics Director of the Whitley County Family YMCA.

Pitching a good problem for CC

   If there is such a thing as a good problem to have in the softball season, Columbia City has a big one.
   Unlike in baseball, softball relies on the arm of one, maybe two, at the mound during the season.
   From 2010 alone, the Lady Eagles return two from a 6-1 share of the Northeast Hoosier Conference championship.
   The depth of Columbia City’s pitching staff grew to three with incoming freshman Allie Vodde.
