Sectional draw sets up possible rivalry rematch

   INDIANAPOLIS — The season started with two rivals meeting in Whitley County boys’ basketball.
   Why not have it end with one.
   Sunday, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) drew up the path for over 400 teams across the state of Indiana.
   Among them, three county teams are vying for a sectional championship.
   Columbia City (14-5) and Whitko (14-4) opened the regular season with a buzzer-beating thriller 59-58 in the Eagles favor.

’Busco derails in second half

   GARRETT — One glaring statistic stuck out Tuesday night when the Churubusco boys’ basketball team hit the road to Garrett.
   3-for-12 (25 percent).
   That is what the Eagles shot from the free throw line in the second half of a road loss to the Railroaders 47-40.
   “It’s been a little bit of an issue all year and tonight it got us,” Churubusco head coach Mike McBride said. “It comes back to bite you and it bit us tonight.”

Senior foursome named to All-NHC

   After an exit earlier than they expected, Columbia City girls’ basketball got some good news Monday to lift the spirits of four Lady Eagle seniors.
   The Northeast Hoosier Conference announced its all-conference teams for the 2010-11 season. Among them, Columbia City (12-10, 1-6) landed four starters within the various team selections.
   For first-year head coach Amy Shearer, it’s some comfort at the end of a 12-10 season.

Whitko grabs TRC in Rob’s House

   SOUTH WHITLEY — As the final minutes ticked down Saturday afternoon the chant began at Whitko High School.
   “This is Rob’s House.”
   As the class 3A No. 4 Whitko Wildcats locked up the outright championship in the Three Rivers Conference against Manchester 61-34, head coach Rob Irwin remained at home recovering from chemotherapy treatments.
   However, it didn’t take long for leader of the Wildcats to find out about his team’s newest title.

County wrestlers miss ticket punch for state

   FORT WAYNE — And then there were none. For the first time in recent memory, Whitley County will not be represented at Conseco Fieldhouse for the individual wrestling state championships.
   All nine Whitley County wrestlers, five from Whitko and four from Churubusco, fell in the first two rounds with several just missing the trip to Indy, including one in a controversial manner.

Underdog Lady Eagles cut down by Garrett 75-28

   LAGRANGE — Going into the class 2A Prairie Heights girls basketball sectional not many probably had Churubusco at the top of their lists for winning a title.
   However, after a emotional semifinal win over the host Lady Panthers, the Lady Eagles carried their hopes to a title shot.
   Churubusco (7-14) took its longest winning streak (four) in more than  a decade into the championship Saturday night.

No love found for Columbia City in February slump

   COLUMBIA CITY — Marion, a boys’ basketball team that averages 70 points a game, was held to 52 by Columbia City Saturday night. However, the Eagles were unable to convert on the offensive end losing 52-38.
   Marion’s speed and high pressure defense forced 19 turnovers, causing the Eagles to miss out on scoring opportunities.
   “When you have 19 turnovers in a game like that, it’s going to be hard to come out on top,” Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict said.

Uplifting win gives ’Busco title shot

   LAGRANGE — There is a win every successful program can look back on. The one win that turned the tide and built something more than just a winning team.
   Friday night, after seasons of struggle, Churubusco girls’ basketball might have found that break.
   The Lady Eagles stared down a 9-2 first quarter deficit to host Prairie Heights in the class 2A sectional semifinal. A switch to the full court press brought with it a fourth consecutive win for Churubusco, 56-46, and a berth in the sectional championship Saturday.

Richter wraps up at state

   INDIANAPOLIS — As just one of three freshmen in the 50-meter freestyle race at the Indiana high school state final’s opening day Friday, Lady Eagle Andrea Richter made her debut in 30th-place.
   Columbia City’s only sectional champion in girls’ swimming went into the event seeded 29th out of 32 swimmers.
   Richter swam to a time of 25.87 in the first of four qualifying heats. The top 16 swimmers moved on to today’s finals at the Indiana University Natatorium on the IUPUI campus.

Familiar exit: City bumped by NorthWood

   COLUMBIA CITY — We have all seen sporting events where a team digs a themselves a big hole to start the game only to come back with a furious rally to win at the end.
   Friday night’s class 3A sectional semifinal between the host Columbia City Lady Eagles and the NorthWood Lady Panthers was not that game.
