CHURUBUSCO – It usually is a good thing when a basketball team outscores their opponent from the free throw line. However, it is an unfortunate thing if that is where half your points come from. That was the case for the Churubusco Lady Eagles Saturday night in their contest with Northeast Corner Conference foe, the Hamilton Lady Marines.
The Lady Eagles managed only four field goals through the first three periods and fell to the visitors by a 45-32 score. ’Busco started well, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on two free throws by Haleigh Gross and a three pointer by Chandler Blake.
SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko girls hoops team has been unable to defeat Rochester since the current batch of seniors were in eighth grade.
In fact, aside from a two-point loss in 2005, the Lady Wildcats haven’t managed to keep the Lady Zebra’s margin of victory within single digits since the millennium began.
That changed Saturday night, as Whitko hosted — and defeated — Rochester, 51-48, in a close game that was within one point with under a minute left in the contest.
COLUMBIA CITY — Bell-mont’s boys basketball team took nearly the same approach Saturday at Columbia City as the girls used Friday against the Lady Eagles — a low-possession, low-scoring ball game. Unfortunately for the Braves, they lost 47-38 like the girls did Friday in Decatur.
Columbia City pulled out to a 5-0 lead one minute into the game with a bucket by Daniel Woll in the first possession and a 3-point play by senior Austin Paul.
