Friday night football scrimmages

Area football teams had the opportunity to face competition Friday night with scrimmages.

Columbia City hosted Goshen, while Whitko traveled to Garrett and Churubusco played at Heritage.

Col. City golf opens at Warsaw

WARSAW — Columbia City’s girls golf season opened Monday morning at the same place it ended last year —Stonehenge.

The Lady Eagles were bested by a strong Warsaw team, which opened its season with a score of 184. Columbia City shot a 224. Last season’s sectional match was held at Stonehenge, where both Columbia City and Whitko saw the end of their seasons.

Though as a team the Lady Eagles lost by a significant margin, Columbia City’s No. 1 linkster Jackie Leeuw shot just one-over Warsaw’s medalists with a 45. Lady Tigers Nikke Lalonde and Beth Meadows both fired 44s.

The group also raced at South Anthony Speedway in Fort Wayne, Big Lake Speedway and New Paris Speedway.

They made appearances at South Bend, Kokomo, Avilla and Hicksville, Ohio.

Last season, Whitko’s girls soccer team won the sectional title in its first season as an IHSAA sanctioned team.

Head Coach Gary Sims, along with three of the team’s top four scorers are back this season, with games beginning Thursday.

Columbia City’s No. 1s: Derek Hinen, Celine Rongos leaders of the court

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s No. 1 singles netters are no rookies of the sport.

Seniors Derek Hinen and Celine Rongos have both been playing tennis since they were young.

“When I was five years old, my dad started taking me out to the courts and hitting with me for fun,” Rongos said. “After that, I never stopped.”

Hinen said his family has played together since he was young.

Both Hinen and Rongos made Northeast Hoosier Conference All-Conference Teams last season.Rongos was also All-District, All-State Honorable Mention and named the Most Valuable Player.
