COLUMBIA CITY — It’s not every day an athlete gets a call to participate in the Olympic Trials.
But for former Columbia City High School stand-out Leah Eber, it’s only fitting.
Ranked as one of the top 24 long jumpers in the nation, Eber performs at the Olympic level. She got the call just hours before she was expected to jump.
She got up the next morning to get on a plane and fly to Omaha, Neb.
Athletes had 48 hours prior to the event to declare if they were going to compete in the trials, leaving Eber restless until she got the news.

COLUMBIA CITY — Despite excessive heat and last week’s storm, Eagle Glen Golf Course in Columbia City hasn’t had a decrease in customers.
Though temperatures passed the 100-degree mark, employees said avid golfers are still on the course.
“People have been golfing early in the morning or later in the evening (after 4 p.m.),” employee Shelly Davis said.
Last week, the course provided free bottled water to linksters who played during the 100-degree heat, with coolers set up throughout the course.

COLUMBIA CITY — Most Columbia City volleyball fans know when Gabrielle Hazen is making her approach and the ball is in the air: the Lady Eagles are about to score a point.
At 6-foot-2, Hazen towers over the net, and her opponents. Her arms reach several feet over the net, helping her to be Columbia City’s dominant force.
She led the team in both blocking and hitting last season as a sophomore, was named 2nd-Team All-Conference and was on the All-Area Honorable Mention team.
With all of those accolades, it’s hard to imagine she’s only played volleyball for four years.
Columbia City High School awarded six players for baseball.

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s Ian Pherigo is setting the bar high in the weight room for his fellow football teammates. Pherigo holds the National record in squats for his age and size at 352 pounds.
The senior is a full back on the football team, and wrestled in his freshman and sophomore years.
“I gave up wrestling last season for lifting,” Pherigo said.
