April 6th

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s baseball team traveled to Oak Hill and lost Thursday night, 5-0.
With several players out on spring break, Eagle Head Coach Mark Grove said the team was short-handed.
“Much of the team wasn’t in town,” Grove said. “That should also make it tough tonight when we travel to Carroll.”
Carroll has won several state baseball titles in the last five years.
Oak Hill picked up its five runs gradually throughout the game, with one in the first inning, one in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Columbia City seniors Brandon Gay and Matt Rethlake were named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Honorable Mention team.
Also garnishing honors from the IBCA were juniors Drew Benedict and Derek Hinen, receiving All-State Underclassmen Honorable Mention honors.

Columbia City’s 4th-grade Junior Lady Eagles competed in a tournament at Norwell High School. The team went 3-1 for the day and placed second. The Pierceton Elementary fourth and fifth grade girls recently completed their basketball season. Indian Springs Middles School wrestlers finished their season with second place finishes in the conference meet.

COLUMBIA CITY — Churubusco’s boys and Columbia City’s girls won the Eel River Rivalry track meet Thursday night at Columbia City.
Churubusco won the boys meet by 17 points over Whitko and 23 points over Columbia City (69-52-46).
Columbia City’s girls defeated Churubusco by 13 points and Whitko by 33 (71-58-38).

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City High School girls basketball program recently had two of its own recognized by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Associatoin (IBCA).Â
Seniors Sidney Bunyan and Sarah Opliger were awarded the IBCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention for their efforts in the classroom and on the basketball court.
IBCA head coaches from high schools across the state nominated seniors who met specific criteria, which included a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, a rank in the upper 25 percent of one’s class, a minimum SAT score of 1,500 or minimum ACT score of 23.
WABASH — Whitko boys and girls track and field teams traveled to Wabash and game away with victories, 99-33 and 65-57, respectively.
The boys team had several tracksters win multiple events, helping the Wildcats triple the Apache’s point total.
Trapper Mize won the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:55 and the 3200 at 10:54. Whitko’s Jordan Sims also won two events, the 110-meter (16.9 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (42.1). Finishing first in the 100-meter dash was Connor Stouder. Stouder’s time was 11.5 seconds.
His time of 23.8 was also good enough for first in the 200 dash.
