CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s boys and girls basketball teams played host to their Central Noble counterparts Tuesday in the opening round of the Northeast Corner Conference basketball tournament.
Both Churubusco teams fell to defeat with the Lady Eagles losing 39-36 and the boys’ team dropping a 55-36 contest.
While both Eagle teams lost — relegating them to the consolation bracket of the tourney — the paths they took were quite different.
SYRACUSE — Countless hours of practicing free throws paid off for Aubrey Wright Tuesday night at Wawasee.
After taking a 7-0 lead to start the game, the Lady Eagles gave up the lead for the first time in the contest with 17 seconds left to play. Facing a 46-45 deficit, Wright was fouled with 10.9 seconds on the clock and knocked down both shots from the charity stripe to win, 47-46.
Wright led the team in scoring with 15 points and also tallied five steals and six rebounds. Alyssa Hansen also hit a shot from behind the arc, and Emily Whiteleather scored six in the first quarter.
