Eagles drop home opener

December 2, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s young basketball team is continuing to gain experience and improve in the early part of the season.

After beating county-rival Whitko in the season-opener Wednesday, the Eagles dropped a low-scoring, 46-35 game to Warsaw in their home opener Saturday night.

While the score writes its own story about the defensive efforts of both teams, the 11-point margin is slightly misleading.

SYRACUSE — Columbia City’s wrestling team made the trip to Syracuse Saturday to defend the Wawasee Invitational title the Eagles won last year.

Columbia City joined Whitley County rival Whitko, the host Wawasee Warriors, West Noble, Tippecanoe Valley and Fort Wayne South Side in making up the field.

The Eagles swept the competition, posting a 5-0 record on their way to the invitational crown, while Whitko finished third with a 3-2 record.

Whitko falls to fast Lion pace

LEO-CEDARVILLE — A speedy offense from the host Leo Lions was too much for Whitko Saturday.

The Wildcats lost to Leo by a final score of 79-46. The defeat puts Whitko at 0-2 on the 2013-14 campaign. It was the first game of the year for the 1-0 Lions.

Leo ran a high-pressure, full court defense that quickened the pace of the game, particularly in the second half. The Lions had 50 points combined from the third and fourth quarter.

Whitko Boys Basketball Head Coach Scott Wessel said his team had the correct strategy in its first game of the year against Columbia City — slow the pace.
