Undefeated, conference champs

Whitko Middle School’s 8th grade girls basketball team finished its season with a 19-0 record Saturday after winning the NELMSC championship over Edgewood.

Canterbury’s girls basketball team won the Class 1A Indiana State Title Saturday in Terre Haute. The team has five Whitley County natives, including Larwill’s Darby Maggard.

Painful payback: DeKalb ends Eagles’ triumphant season with 1-point defeat in sectional semifinal

HUNTERTOWN — All good things must come to an end.

Unfortunately for Columbia City’s boys basketball team, the end was Friday night at Carroll.

The Eagles took on DeKalb in the semifinal game, a squad Columbia City beat by one point in the regular season.

The Barons earned revenge in the state tournament, topping the Eagles 46-45 and ending head coach Chris Benedict’s season with a group of seniors he’s coached since they were tykes.

Kreiger’s best half: Coach’s wife heads to state finals with Canterbury

COLUMBIA CITY — It wouldn’t be a surprise if basketball was a condition in the Kreigers’ wedding vows.

Debbie Kreiger, wife of Wayne Kreiger, a Columbia City basketball coach for more than 30 years and current Canterbury girls head coach, has been to more than 500 of Wayne’s games in their 23 years of marriage.

“The basketball season always brings high energy and much excitement into our home,” Debbie said.

In 23 years, Debbie has only missed two of her husband’s games.

ISMS 8th grade advances in tourney

COLUMBIA CITY — It was a close finish at the Indian Springs Middle School 8th grade Lady Stars conference tournament opener — beating Lincoln by only one point, 34-33.

It wasn’t a close finish in Whitko’s tournament opener against Wawasee, as the Lady Wildcats won 69-14.

In the ISMS game, the Lady Stars started out strong, leading 14-8 in the first quarter. As the game progressed, both teams became more aggressive, especially toward the end of the fourth quarter, where the two teams teetered back and forth with the lead.

Baseball registration ends this Saturday

COLUMBIA CITY — Registration for youth baseball in Columbia City ends Saturday. Softball’s deadline will be in two weeks, on March 16.

The age groups are 4 to 14. There will be a registration time at the pavilion at Morsches Park Saturday from 12 to 2 p.m.

Players are able to be registered for either sport at those times.

Columbia City Park Director Mark Green said people may still register after those dates, but there is a late fee.

“I don’t like charging late fees,” he said.

Indian Springs grapplers top Woodside, 76-8

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School's wrestling team battled against Woodside Thursday night.

The Eagles came out triumphant with a lopsided score of 76-8.

Winners for Indian Springs were: AJ Chapin, Braden Baker, Joe Willson, Jacob Wigent, Dylan McClure, Drew Rethlake, Hunter Reed, Matthew Wright, Seth Rosen, Jacob Morse, Jacob Whitehead, Jacob Elkins and Weston Ottenger.
The team is currently 19-2.

Also picking up victories for ISMS were Brenden Schaper, Jon O’Dell, Tyler Hare, Karson Rider, Trevor Fries, Josh Piquignot and Mydrae Brown.

Lady Eagles fall to Lincoln, 35-13

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School’s 7th grade Lady Stars ended their season with a 35-13 loss to Lincoln in the first round of the conference tournament Thursday.

Hannah Behm led Indian Springs against Lincoln with a total of seven points.

Shayla Harris chipped in an additional four points and Emilee Smith had two.
