Girls tracksters prep for regional

May 17, 2013

FORT WAYNE — Nearly 20 Whitley County girls athletes are headed to the Northrop Regional track meet Tuesday.

Though all have different goals and aspirations for the rest of the season, one thing is certain — all are happy to stay in the mix for another week.

For Columbia City junior Samantha Roush, its a state finals bid she’s looking for. For Whitko senior Josie Sparks, it’s a school record.

Undefeated: Whitko’s Winning Wolf

SOUTH WHITLEY — “What we are seeing here is the byproduct of four years of hard work.”

Whitko Head Baseball Coach Erik Hisner didn’t expect to have an undefeated pitcher this far into the season — but he does.
Wyatt Wolf, senior, is 5-0 on the season, including throwing a no-hitter earlier this year.

“It’s not something we emphasize with our pitchers,” Hisner said. “We emphasize controlling the controllable. Sometimes you have no control over your win-loss record. What we do have control over is our attitude, effort and competitiveness.”

WARSAW — For most of the team, Whitko’s girls tennis season came to an end Thursday night, as the Lady Eagles dropped a close 3-2 contest to Wawasee in the opening round of sectionals.

But it’s not all over yet.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Laura Alfieri and Abby Marshall won their match over Wawasee, qualifying to move on to the regional with Columbia City’s Celine Rongos in singles, and the doubles pair of Sydney Ford and Macie Hinen.

Alfieri and Marshall took a 6-2, 6-0 advantage over Lady Warriors Jada Antonides and Sam Prins.
