Softball sectional pairings announced

The IHSAA announced the sectional brackets for softball this morning.

Columbia City drew Carroll for their fist game in the Class 4A Sectional 5 at DeKalb.

Whitko will play Bellmont in the first round of Class 3A Sectional 23 at Norwell.

Churubusco has been paired up with Bishop Luers in the Class 2A Sectional 36 at Eastside.

Rongos makes college choice

CONFERENCE, COUNTY CHAMPS: Girls track wins third straight NHMLC

NEW HAVEN — Indian Springs Middle School’s girls track team won its third straight Northeast Hoosier Middle Level Conference Title.

ISMS’s boys squad placed third behind Carroll and Maple Creek.

The event was held at New Haven Saturday, and both teams will travel to Plymouth to compete in the NLMSC conference meet.

New Haven’s event had several teams, including DeKalb, Bellmont, Summit, East Noble, Woodside and Norwell, along with Carroll, Maple Creek, New Haven and ISMS.

Lakeland girls tennis drops Churubusco, 4-1

LA GRANGE — Churubusco’s girls tennis team fell on the road to NECC foe Lakeland.

The Lady Lakers beat the Lady Eagles, 4-1 in varsity action and 4-1 in junior varsity action as well.

Picking up the win for the Lady Eagles at the varsity level was Kayleen Mitchell at No. 3 singles, defeating Amanda Miller 6-2, 7-5.

Losing in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, were Churubusco’s Cheyenne Conner and Audrey Gierscher, who both lost in straight sets to Carlee Richardson and Audrey Stephens.

Whitko drops TRC contest

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team lost its second game in a row to a Three Rivers Conference opponent Wednesday.

The Wildcats fell to visiting Wabash, 9-2. The Apaches have now won four in a row.

In the defeat, Whitko is now 15-7 for the season and 2-3 overall in conference play.

Wabash built up a 5-1 lead after three, then added two more in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth. Whitko got its second run in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Ethan Nicodemus was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats on the mound.

Big fifth inning keys Lady Eagles

CHURUBUSCO — It all came at once for Churubusco’s softball team.

A big fifth inning for the Lady Eagles keyed them to victory Wednesday against Eastside. ‘Busco won, 6-3.

The Lady Eagles scored all six of their runs of the contest in the fifth inning. After that, the game was 6-0 in their favor.

Eastside chipped away, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but it was not enough to take away the lead that Churubusco had built.

Whitko J.V. outscores foes 29-2

SOUTH WHITLEY — Although not undefeated anymore, Whitko’s junior varsity softball team continues to roll through its schedule.

A double-header split with Columbia City Saturday tagged Whitko with its first loss, but the Lady Wildcats have earned two wins so far this week, scoring 29 runs in the process while only allowing two from their opponents.

Whitko shuts out Wabash, 5-0

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s softball team scored its first win in Three Rivers Conference play for the 2013 season.

The Lady Wildcats shut out visiting Wabash 5-0 Wednesday. Whitko is now 4-14 on the year and 1-4 in the TRC.

Emily Weigold went the distance for Whitko from the circle, striking out eight Apache batters and only allowing four hits.

Whitko scored twice in the second inning, once in third, and twice in the fifth in the game.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF: Undefeated Rongos may lead NHC

COLUMBIA CITY — “The sky is the limit for Celine.”

Kathleen Myers, Columbia City’s head tennis coach, believes in her No. 1 singles player.

But who wouldn’t?

Celine Rongos is undefeated after 14 matches, topping all Northeast Hoosier Conference opponents that she’s faced.

It’s not uncommon to see a 6-0, 6-0 score next to Rongos’ name — but the wins didn’t come without hard work.

“Celine doesn’t just play from March to May,” Myers said. “She works a number of hours outside the tennis season and has a very strong work ethic.”
