Lady Eagles advance three to regional

FORT WAYNE — Churubusco Head Track Coach Zack Dock described Tuesday evening’s Northrop IHSAA Girl’s Track and Field Sectional as “a very good night.”

The Lady Eagles used strong performances in the field events to send three athletes in four events on to next Tuesday’s Northrop Regional competition.

The Lady Eagles placed ninth as a team with only two points separating them from seventh place.

Eagle junior Katie Monk qualified in both of the throwing events.

Col. City garners second at sectional

NEW HAVEN — “Elated is an understatement to describe my feelings after the meet.”

Needless to say, Columbia City Head Coach Bob Fahl was pleased with his team’s performance at the New Haven sectional girls track meet Tuesday.

“Everyone we anticipated to qualify for the regional made it,” Fahl said. “There were no disappointments.”

The Lady Eagles placed second as a team, only topped by Bellmont, 156-106, in a field of 11 teams. Whitko’s girls also competed, placing seventh overall.

Baseball sectionals unveiled

Sectional pairings for baseball have been released by the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Columbia City will play in the seven-team Class 4A Sectional 5 to be held at Carroll. The Eagle's first-round opponent will be DeKalb.

This contest will be a rematch of the April 30 game at DeKalb that Columbia City won 7-4. Columbia City also ended DeKalb's sectional run last year in the second round at DeKalb.

If the Eagles move on, they will play the winner of the Snider-East Noble first round game.

Spring sports ready for tourney time

COLUMBIA CITY — Area sports teams are preparing for conference and sectional play in the upcoming weeks.

While many seasons have felt to have been cut short due to a late start from poor weather conditions in March and April, there have been few cancellations in the last two weeks — readying teams for post-season action.

Tracksters are the first to begin sectional action, as the girls squads compete tonight and boys are scheduled to run Thursday, weather permitting.

Columbia City’s and Whitko’s girls go to New Haven, and Churubusco is competing in the Northrop sectional.

ISMS linksters win invitational

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School’s girls golf team won its own invitational May 3.

The Lady Eagles scored a 232, 11 strokes ahead of the second-place team, Wawasee. Indian Springs was led by Sydney VanMeter, who was the medalist out of 59 other linksters.

VanMeter scored a 46, her personal best score. Lincoln placed third with 259 strokes, and Whitko came in fourth with a score of 262.

Whitko tops North Miami

DENVER — Whitko’s baseball squad traveled to Three Rivers Conference foe North Miami, topping the Warriors by an 8-2 score.

Wyatt Wolf improved to 6-0 on the season, pitching five innings with eight strike outs. He had one earned run, five hits and five walks. Weigold closed out the last inning with one strike out.

Tanner Gaff led the Wildcats with 1-for-3 batting, scoring a run, earning an RBI and tallying two stolen bases. Wolf was also 1-for-3 and scored a run.

Col. City frosh, soph. compete at Concordia

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City’s freshmen and sophomores on the boys track team competed in the Concordia Relays Saturday.

The distance medley team of Braden Lecklider, Joseph Lude, Davie Fulk and Andrew McFarland placed second. The 1,600-meter relay squad of Lude, Ryan Mosher, T.J. Yagel and Kaleb Greenwood came in fifth.

Michael Simmons also took fifth in the shot put. the 800-meter relay team of Greenwood, Lecklider, Michael Wyrick and Kohltin Green came in sixth.

Fifth inning lifts Col. City over Norwell

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls softball team took a 10-run win over a Northeast Hoosier Conference opponent Monday at Morsches Park.

The Lady Eagles posted a seven-run fifth inning to take the 15-5 win over Norwell.

“We needed a game like that,” Columbia City Head Coach Steve Cox said. “It was fun.”

The Lady Eagles had an 8-5 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Lady Wildcats fall to Heritage

SOUTH WHITLEY — Saturday dawned cold and damp, and the Whitko softball team had trouble warming up against the visiting Heritage Lady Patriots.

After working out of a first inning jam, the Lady Wildcats gave up seven runs in the top of the third inning. Despite a late-game effort the Lady Wildcats fell in a non-conference matchup by an 11-2 score.

With two outs in the top of the first inning, the Lady Patriots strung together two singles and a walk to load the bases against the home standing Lady Wildcats.

Col. City splits weekend matches

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s girls tennis team split two matches this weekend, beating Peru and falling to Mishawaka Marion.

The Lady Eagles took a strong 4-1 advantage over Peru, dropping their only loss in the No. 2 singles match.

Celine Rongos won the No. 1 singles match in straight sets. In No. 3 singles, Adriana Brown took a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Macie Hinen and Sydney Ford took a 6-0, 6-2 win. Alaina Beckner and Breanna Hicks won the No. 2 doubles match by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
