Columbia City came in third at the sectional at Stonehenge Country Club, five strokes behind the host-Tigers, who won with a score of 314. Triton was second, four strokes ahead of the Eagles’ 319.

FORT WAYNE — Churubusco’s baseball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday.

The Eagles lost to Adams Central, 13-10, in a sectional semifinal contest at Indiana Tech.

A comeback by Churubusco fell just short. The Flyin’ Jets had a 5-1 lead after three innings.

Four more runs from Adams Central in the fourth made it 9-1. Churubusco was equal to the Jets in the fourth frame by chipping in four as well to bring the margin to 9-5.

Columbia City defeats Central Noble

May 29, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — It was a banner day for the Columbia City boys golf team.

The Eagles beat Central Noble, 150-186, at Eagle Glen Golf Course Tuesday, coming together for an impressive team effort.

Columbia City was led by medalist Spencer Klimek, who shot a 34, good for two-under par. Teammate Tyler Green was right at par with a 36.

All told, the five Eagle varsity golfers outscored the top Cougar golfer, as Max Dryer and Matt Benedict both had scores of 40 and Cameron Slavich was at 43. The top Central Noble golfer shot 44.

Eagles land at second in sectional

May 29, 2013

HUNTERTOWN — For the third year in a row, the Columbia City baseball team is sectional runner-up.

This year, the Eagles came closer to hoisting the sectional trophy than they have in either of the two previous years.

Columbia City lost to Carroll 6-3 Tuesday night in the sectional championship game.

It was the second game of the day for the Eagles, who earned their way into the finals after defeating Snider earlier that day 6-0 in the semifinals.

“To have a showing like we did in our sectional, you can’t really ask for a whole lot more,” said Columbia City Head Coach Zac Bireley.

Whitko falls to Eastbrook in sectional

May 28, 2013

DECATUR — Whitko’s baseball team saw its season come to an end in its sectional opener against Eastbrook Friday.

The Wildcats fell by a final score of 12-7.

Whitko dug a hole and could not get out of it. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and did not relinquish the advantage.

“Their leadoff guy reached on an error,” Whitko Head Baseball Coach Erik Hisner said of the first inning. “That kind of set the tone for the game.”

On to state

May 28, 2013

Columbia City netter Celine Rongos is headed to the Indiana State Finals in LaPorte next week after winning her No. 1 singles match in the semistate at Culver Academies Saturday.

Rongos topped Morgan Smith, of Bremen, by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Smith was undefeated until she met Rongos. Last year, Smith made a run in the individual state tournament.

“I am very pleased with how Celine played tonight,” Columbia City Head Coach Kathleen Myers said.

“She dug deep and came out with a win. Her hard work in the off-season is paying off.”
