Apaches top Wildcat tennis

SOUTH WHITLEY — Visiting Wabash downed the Whitko boys tennis team Wednesday.

The Apaches defeated the Wildcats by a final of 4-1.

Tyler Baugher was the lone Whitko winner, picking up a victory in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles, Blake Castle of Whitko dropped his match, 6-3, 6-4. Cole Bechtold lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. In doubles play, the No. 1 doubles pair of Alex Bechtold and Bailey Platt fell 6-3, 6-1, and the No. 2 doubles combo of Reed Brace and Alex Robbins lost for the Wildcats, 6-2, 6-1.

Col. City to take on ranked foe

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s football team is about to run the proverbial gauntlet in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.

Three consecutive games with ranked opponents loom. The first, this Friday at 7 p.m., will be a road contest at New Haven.

The Bulldogs are currently ranked fifth in the Associated Press poll for Class 4A and are a perfect 5-0 for 2013.

After New Haven, the Eagles will take on East Noble, currently ranked ninth in Class 4A, on Oct. 4. The ranked slate concludes Oct. 11 when Columbia City travels to Carroll, ranked 15th in Class 6A.

Wildcats look to win homecoming

SOUTH WHITLEY — After an 0-2 start, Whitko’s football team has put its struggles in the past with a three-game winning streak.

More importantly for the Wildcats, the three consecutive victories have all come against Three Rivers Conference (TRC) opponents.

Whitko has scored 138 points in the three wins, including a 51-7 road win against Wabash last week.

Now, the Wildcats will welcome Northfield to the confines of South Whitley in an effort to move the streak to four in a row and stay in the hunt for a conference championship.

No. 4 Eagles to host Chargers

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football team is now ranked fourth in the Associated Press poll for Class 2A, and the 5-0 Eagles will once again welcome a larger school to their home field Friday.

One week after topping Class 4A Angola 14-7, ’Busco will host West Noble Friday in a game set to kick off at 7 p.m.

The Chargers were shut out last week, 33-0, by Lakeland, which is the only other unbeaten squad in the Northeast Corner Conference besides Churubusco.

Whitko soccer falls short

September 25, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls soccer team fell in a close, 2-1 match to Garrett Monday.

The Lady Wildcats attempted a comeback after the Lady Railroaders took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but fell short.

Scoring the lone goal for Whitko was senior Jenny Brown, with the assist from Reghan Craig.

’Busco sweeps Marines

HAMILTON — Churubusco’s volleyball team hit the road Tuesday and came away with a sweep of a conference opponent.

The Lady Eagles beat Hamilton by a final of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-13.

With the win, ’Busco now has a 4-2 overall record in the Northeast Corner Conference.

Alyssa Anderson led the Lady Eagles in kills Tuesday with a total of 11. Anderson and Lacey Pulley were the leading servers for Churubusco, with each having three aces.

Pulley had 21 assists from the setter position to pace the squad.

Whitko netters drop tight match

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys tennis team dropped a close match to West Noble Monday.

The Wildcats fell 3-2, with wins coming from the ’Cat’s seniors, Tyler Baugher and Blake Castle.

In No. 1 singles, Baugher won a decisive 6-0, 6-3 match. Castle won 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 singles.

In No. 3 singles, Cole Bechtold fell 7-5, 6-3.

Columbia City downs conference opponent

September 25, 2013

OSSIAN — Columbia City’s volleyball squad continued its upswing Tuesday night, topping Northeast Hoosier Conference foe Norwell in Ossian.

The Lady Eagles won decisive 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18 games, after falling to NHC opponent Homestead in five matches last week.

Columbia City topped Blackhawk Christian Monday night and continued with more of the same against the Lady Knights Tuesday.

CCHS Alumni Golf Outing

September 24, 2013

Columbia City High School’s Alulmni Association held its 7th Annual Golf Outing at Eagle Glen Golf Course Saturday.

Eleven teams participated in the event.

The winning team, scoring a 55 (17 under par), from left: Doug Sauers, Gary Harris, Jeff Wright, Andrew Thompson (Alumni Association president, presenting trophy) and Troy Jagger.

Rongos improves to 11-1 on season

September 24, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s boys tennis team took on Manchester Monday, and the Eagles’ Niko Rongos improved to 11-1 with a three-set win.

After falling 7-5 in the first set, Rongos came back to win 6-4, 6-1 in the final two to grab the win.
