Whitko JV volleyball hosts invite

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s junior varsity team played host to its volleyball tournament Saturday.

Other participating schools were Central Noble, North Miami and Tippecanoe Valley.

The four teams played each other, with the team recording the most wins being declared the champion.

North Miami won the overall title with a 4-2 record. Central Noble finished 4-3 followed by Tippy Valley 3-4 and Whitko 3-5.

For the Wildcats, they had played Central Noble and North Miami earlier in the season and defeated both squads.

Col. City JV falls to New Haven

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City JV football squad played host to the visiting New Haven Bulldogs in Saturday morning’s C-Team football contest.

The Eagles gave up three second half touchdowns to fall to the Bulldog JV by a 32-0 score.

The visitors got on the scoreboard with 1:56 left in a see-saw first quarter with a 22-yard sweep around the left side.

New Haven converted the two-point conversion attempt to take an 8-0 lead.

The Eagle defense held the Bulldogs for the rest of the first half.

Eagles fall to NHC powerhouse New Haven

NEW HAVEN — The Columbia City Eagle football squad began a stretch of three straight games against state-ranked opponents with a road game against unbeaten and Northeast Hoosier Conference leader New Haven.

The Eagles, forced by injuries to go deep into the depth charts at several offensive and defensive positions, were able to hang with the Bulldogs for much of the game before falling 29-6.

A quick count noted eight Eagle starters on the sidelines with various injuries, with another running back that would leave the game at halftime.

Eagles soar to victory over Chargers, 49-0

CHURUBUSCO — Key plays on both sides of the ball keyed Churubusco’s football to one of its most-balance victories of the 2013 season.

Coming into week 6, the Eagles were ranked fourth in Class 2A in Indiana by the Associated Press. ’Busco added to that esteem by defeating West Noble 49-0 Friday.

With the win, the Eagles are now 6-0 for the year and 6-0 in the Northeast Corner Conference.

Churubusco Head Football Coach Paul Sade called the game one of the best all-around performances by his team, including offense, defense and special teams.

Second-half rally lifts Whitko to win

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s football team continued its winning ways Friday night, downing Northfield on homecoming night and staying undefeated in the Three Rivers Conference.

After facing a 14-7 deficit in the first half, the Wildcats rallied to score four touchdowns in the final 24 minutes and take a 34-20 victory.
The charge was led by quarterback Ethan Nicodemus and runningback Tanner Hughes.

Hughes scored the lone first-half TD, then found the end zone twice in the third quarter to spark a comeback for the Wildcats.

’Busco scores victory

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s volleyball team picked up a home win against Fort Wayne Canterbury Thursday.

’Busco beat Canterbury in four games, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-22.

For the season, the Lady Eagles now have a 9-10 record.

Danielle Pippenger led Churubusco statistically in several categories. She paced the Lady Eagles in kills with eight, blocks with three and digs with 19.

Alisha Farner led the team in aces with four. Lacey Pulley was the assist leade with 29.

Churubusco will head to the South Side Invite Saturday.

Lady Eagles earn conference victory

COLUMBIA CITY — Its coach said it wasn’t the most effective performance, but the Columbia City Lady Eagle volleyball team came away Thursday with a Northeast Hoosier Conference win against New Haven.

The Lady Eagles beat the Lady Bulldogs 25-21, 25-16 and 25-21 for the three-game sweep.

According to Columbia City Head Volleyball Coach Trish Hinen, her team had a marathon week, which contributed to Thursday’s performance.

“We have had seven matches in six days,” she said. “So, it wasn’t pretty. We didn’t play our best, but it’s a conference win.”

Whitko soccer ties Rochester, 2-2

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko soccer coach Jason Ehrman continues to see progress with his team. After coming off a tough 4-0 loss Wednesday night to Eastbrook, the Wildcat’s were back in action Thursday.

Three Rivers Conference opponent Rochester came calling, and after 80 minutes of play both teams settled for a draw with each team scoring two goals.

“A win would have been nice, but to play them (Rochester) to a draw was special for this team. Rochester and Manchester are probably the two best teams in our conference, and to come out with a tie is a major accomplishment,” said Coach Ehrman.

Whitko ties Eastbrook

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls soccer team tied Eastbrook Wednesday.

The Lady Wildcats and Lady Panthers ended the game 1-1.

Whitko got its goal in the first half. Reghan Craig put the ball in the net unassisted.

Eastbrook had its chance in the second half, getting a goal on a penalty kick.

For the game, Whitko had 15 shots on goal overall. Goalkeeper Jordan Hall had eight saves for the Lady Wildcats.

Whitko is now 5-3-5 for the season and next plays at Blackford Saturday.

Whitko volleyball falls to Wabash in four

WABASH — Whitko’s volleyball team lost in four sets to Wabash Tuesday.

The Lady Apaches beat the Lady Wildcats by a final of 25-22, 25-11, 17-25 and 25-18.

Whitko was led in kills by Maddie Gawthrop, who had 14. Emily Day led in aces with three and Elaine Warner had 34 assists.

The Lady Wildcats will next play at Columbia City Monday.
