Eagles defeat Bulldogs in singles action

NEW HAVEN — Columbia City’s boys tennis team took two out of three singles matches from New Haven Tuesday.

Niko Rongos of Columbia City moved his 2013 record to 9-0 with a straight-set win.

He beat Corbin Yoh of New Haven, 6-1, 6-2.

In No. 2 singles, Eagle senior Blake Fearnow also grabbed a win. He defeated Drew Guise of New Haven 6-2, 6-2.

Nathan Miller got the lone singles win for the Bulldogs, beating Columbia City’s Dillon Reed 6-2, 6-2.

Lady Wildcats take one at Garrett tourney

GARRETT — Whitko’s volleyball team fell in a match at Garrett Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats swept Hamilton in two sets. Whitko fell in three sets to New Haven and Central Noble and also lost to Eastside.

Whitney Hobbs of Whitko was an all-tournament player for the Lady Wildcats. She had 22 kills, 10 blocks, seven aces and 11 digs.

Whitko boys drop two games at Manchester

Whitko was defeated 1-0 by the Squires in the first game, and fell 2-0 in the second game against North Miami.

Eagle netters compete at Wawasee Saturday

SYRACUSE — Columbia City’s boys tennis team went 0-3 without a complete squad at the Wawasee Invitational Saturday.

Eagle No. 1 singles player Niko Rongos went 3-0 on the day to improve his record to 8-0 for the year.

He scored the lone victories for Columbia City in the match-ups against Fairfield and Jimtown.

In the match with the host-Warriors, Columbia City fell 3-2, losing the final match by forfeit to make the difference.

Rongos won the No. 1 singles match on a super 10 tie-break in the third set.

Col. City runners finish eighth, 13th at Marion

MARION — Columbia City’s girls cross country team came in eighth at the Marion Invitational Saturday, and the boys were 13th.

The Lady Eagle runners were led by Samantha Roush, who came in third overall in a race that featured 111 runners.

For Roush, it was a season-best time of 18:55. She was followed by teammate Brooke Werstler, who posted a season-best of 21:10 to come in 39th.

Shelby Allison was 61st, and Samina Qureshi 62nd for the Lady Eagles.
Natalia Johnson was 69th with a person-best time of 22:31.

Lady ’Cats play in invitational

NORTH MANCHESTER — Whitko’s girls soccer team competed in the Manchester Invitational Saturday, along with several other Three Rivers Conference girls soccer teams — Rochester, North Miami and Manchester.

The Lady Wildcats won in a shootout over the hosts, advancing to the championship game against Rochester — another game that ended in a tiebreaking shootout.

The Lady ’Cats fell 3-1 in the tiebreaker, giving the Lady Zebras the invite title.

Col. City linksters fair well at tourney

WEST LAFAYETTE — Columbia City High School golfer Tyler Green took home second place at Boys 15-19 Division Fall season-opener at the Kampen Golf Course of Purdue University.

Green shot 142 to tie winner Zach Gurtner, then fell in a playoff on the second hole.

Gurtner had two rounds of 71. Green had 75 in his first round, and then rolled to a sizzling 67 in the second round with two birdies and a par on the final three holes.

Eagle homecoming Friday

Churubusco will be celebrating its homecoming this Friday against Eastside at 7 p.m.

The Eagles are currently 3-0 for the season and also 3-0 in conference play.

Whitko returning to home field Friday

The Wildcat football team earned its first win against Southwood last Friday, 41-35.

Whitko will be playing its first home game of 2013, after three on the road, this Friday at 7 p.m. against Manchester.

The Wildcats will be looking for their second win in a row against the Squires, who are currently 0-3 this season.

Wildcats nab first victory

WABASH — Whitko’s football team picked up its first win Friday night, downing Three Rivers Conference foe Southwood by a 41-35 score.

Whitko jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter, and held on to it through the remainder of the game.

Tanner Hughes recorded two touchdowns for Whitko. He had 126 rushing yards on 29 carries, good for 4.3 yards per carry.

Leading the ’Cats in yards per carry was Devin Gerding, at 13.3. He had 10 carries for 133 yards and a TD. Gerding also led the Wildcats on defense with five tackles and two for losses.
