Whitko softball had busy week of games

Whitko’s softball team traveled to Tippecanoe Valley for an invitational last week.

The Lady Wildcats went 0-2 on the day, falling to the hosts and to a strong Concordia team.

However, the Lady Wildcats came back to beat Tippecanoe Valley last Monday, 8-0.

In the tournament opener, the Lady Wildcats fell 20-4 to Fort Wayne Concordia.

Maddie Gawthrop led the offense, getting on base twice with a single and a walk. She scored one run and had two stolen bases.

In the second game of the invite, Whitko fell to the hosts in a close 11-10 match-up.

Col. City tennis tops Whitko

Columbia City’s girls tennis team traveled to Whitko Friday night to beat its county rivals 4-1.

The Lady Eagles played five matches in five nights.

“Some of the girls played more than 14 hours in those five nights,” said Columbia City Head Coach Katie Myers. “I’m very proud of the girls.

“Tennis is a sport where there’s no substitutions, and even if the girls are exhausted, they still have to go out and give it their all each night.”

Columbia City finished the long week 4-1 and 3-0 in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.

Wildcats down Bellmont, 8-6

Whitko’s baseball team took an 8-6 win over Bellmont Friday night.
The Wildcats hung on in a close game, using three pitchers and capitalizing on Bellmont’s six errors.

Whitko took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Bellmont came back to score two runs in the second to make the score 3-2.

Whitko tacked on a run in the bottom of the second to extend its lead, and both teams scored a run apiece in the third to make the score 5-3 going into the fourth frame.

Bellmont narrowed Whitko’s lead in the fourth, scoring two runs, while the Wildcats scored one.

’Busco tennis earns second win

Churubusco’s girls tennis team picked up its second win of the season, beating West Noble Thursday night, 3-2.

Churubusco sophomore Audrey Giercher led the Lady Eagles with a win in No. 1 singles, beating West Noble’s Haley Teel 6-1, 6-3. In No. 3 singles, Cheyenne Conner won a close, 6-4, 6-3 match over West Noble’s Josie Gibbons.

The No. 2 doubles team was the deciding factor in the match, play a long battle. After winning the first set 6-4, the second set went on to a tie-breaker.

The Lady Eagle squad of Maggie Kitt and Nikki Esslinger won 7-6 (7-3) to help Churubusco to the win.

Friday night’s Northeast Hoosier Conference track meet was postponed after rain and thunderstorms moved into the area. Though some of the events were completed, the rest will be wrapped up Monday evening at New Haven.
