Knights slay Eagles’ title hopes

COLUMBIA CITY — Friday night’s sectional title game was not the ending a large crowd of Columbia City football fans had braved the cold for.

First half turnovers and a Norwell offense that kept the Columbia City defense on the field for big chunks of the first half put the Eagles in a 21-point first-half hole that they were not able to climb out of, and Columbia City fell 35-7 to the Knights in the IHSAA Sectional 20 finals.

SCHOOL SPIRIT: Big hype around big game

The stands are expected to be crowded in Columbia City tonight for the Eagles’ sectional championship football game against Norwell. Columbia City is seeking its second-ever sectional title. The Eagles’ last won the sectional in 1993. Pictured above is a full crowd at Columbia City’s Homecoming game in September.

LOCAL ATHLETES: Col. City boys soccer awards

Columbia City High School’s boys soccer program handed out its annual awards last month. Pictured, from left: Jordan Lahr, Defensive Player Award, ISCA (Indiana Soccer Coaches Association) Academic All-State; Drake DeWitt, MVP Award, NHC 2nd-Team All-Conference, ISCA Top Team Player Award, ISCA Academic All-State; Jordan Gregory, Offensive Player Award; and Eric Romanowski, Coaches Award, ISCA Academic All-State.

'REMARKABLY CLOSE': Eagles seek second-ever sectional title

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s football team is seeking its second-ever sectional title Friday night, hosting Norwell in the 7 p.m. championship game. The Eagles and Norwell are remarkably close in most statistical areas. The Eagles are scoring 26.4 points per contest while Norwell is putting up 25.8 points per game.

FANTASTIC FAN: An unexpected greeting

Andy Huston (right), a sixth-grader at Indian Springs Middle School, attended a White Sox game in September at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. Huston was hoping to see his favorite player, Paul Konerko, take the field one last time before retiring at the end of the season. While Konerko did not make an appearance in the game, all was not lost. Seated directly behind Andy was none other than former White Sox slugger Ron Kittle (left).

New Orleans took over sole possession of first place in the NFC South, as running back Mark Ingram continued his strong season as he ran for 100+ yards and 2 touchdowns. The New Orleans defense was able to stymy Carolina QB Cam Newton, who was 10-28 passing for 151 yards.

SOCCER CELEBRATION: Whitko boys soccer team awards

Whitko High School’s boys soccer team celebrated its season at its awards night last month. Receiving awards were, from left: Lane Wolf, Most Improved; Daniel Kirkham, Mental Attitude Award; Jacob Helton, Most Valuable Player; and Johannes Bingham, Mental Attitude Award.

WIN OVER NEW HAVEN: Eagles en route to sectional championship

Columbia City’s football team is en route to its second-ever sectional title with only one opponent in its way — Norwell. The Eagles beat Norwell in the regular season by one point in overtime on Oct. 17. Pictured above is the team after its win over New Haven Friday.
