The Whitko Wildcat 14U Pony League team finished its season 11-3, playing in the Northern Indiana Boys of Summer 14U League. The boys won both the season title and tourney championship after beating Westview 6-5 in the semifinals, then downing a strong Middlebury team 11-6 to end the season.
Jasmine Early, age 12, who will be a seventh grader this fall at Indian Springs Middle School, earned All-American status, competing in the 13 to 14-year-old age group at the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Bloomington June 26-29. Jasmine placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23 and second in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:56.
Jasmine is the daughter of David and Kim Early, and granddaughter of Mark and Tina Schory, Carolyn and Dale Snyder, and Vernita Early, all of Columbia City.
Camp Whitley honored its third and final week leaders Saturday. A nasty storm forced the campers and staff of Camp Whitley into the basement of the kitchen early Tuesday morning. After the storm, camp had beautiful weather for games, swimming and fireworks for the week of July Fourth. During the week, Indiana State Police Trooper Brian Bills stopped by to review gun safety, Columbia City Police Master Patrolman Tim Pittenger and his dog Stryker stopped by in the middle of the week for a K9 demonstration, and Indiana Conservation Officer Darren Reed reviewed boat safety for the campers.
WHITLEY COUNTY â€” Openings have been filled in two major positions in Whitley County athletics.
Whitko recently named a new head boys basketball coach, and Columbia Cityâ€™s new football coach is set to take the field this fall.
Columbia City â€” Taking advantage of the cool weather and sunny skies, golfers Norberto Forero, Tom, Ryan, and Dave Cotterman took in a round of golf at Magic Hills Golf Course in Columbia City on Thursday.
Columbia Cityâ€™s boys golf team held its annual awards banquet last weekend. Award winners were, from left: Trent Murphy, Devol Award and Coachâ€™s Award; Spencer Klimek, MVP; Tyler Green, Season Low Average; Luke Taylor, Most Improved; Max Dryer, Mental Attitude Award. Freshman Numerals winners include Evan and Ryan Kumfer. Reserve Letter Winners: Evan Kumfer, Ryan Kumfer, Matt Kumfer, Gavin Parish, Luke Taylor and Rob Wood. Varsity Letter winners include Murphy, Matt Benedict, Green, Klimek and Cameron Slavich.
FORT WAYNE â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s summer swim team, the Stingrays, picked up a win at the Leigh Ann Palmer Invitational in Fort Wayne June 21.
The squad placed first over 13 other Northeast Indiana teams.
Columbia Cityâ€™s youth baseball league is beginning tournament action this week at Morsches Park.
