COLUMBIA CITY — Last week the Indiana high school basketball schedule took nearly a week off due to heavy amounts of snow fall.
Monday, Columbia City boys’ basketball had no trouble keeping pace with the top teams in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.
Entering the night, the Eagles remained in a two-way tie for second-place with non-other than the opponent coming to town, Norwell.
A game honoring seniors Ben Murphy and Tyler Mosher turned into a sophomore’s game for Columbia City.
FORT WAYNE — As a result of competition at Saturday’s Carroll individual regional wrestling tournament nine Whitley County wrestlers will take the next step toward an individual state title.
By placing in the top four at the regional those wrestlers will advance to next Saturday’s semistate at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Whitko Wildcats will advance five wrestlers by virtue of three second place and two fourth place finishes.
WARSAW — The Richter name is back at the state finals but it’s with a new face.
Saturday, Columbia City freshman Andrea Richter picked up where her older four-time state finalist sister Haley Richter left off.
Andrea Richter went into the Warsaw swimming sectional final Saturday seeded as the top swimming in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events.
February 5th
Snowfall has brought the Whitley County sports schedule to a halt again. The Churubusco and Columbia City boys' basketball games scheduled for Saturday night have been canceled. Columbia City's home game against Norwell will be a made up Monday (Feb. 7) in a tripleheader beginning with the freshmen game at 5:15 p.m. Churubusco's trip to Garrett has not been rescheduled yet. February 4th
DENVER — The Wildcats took the court with heavy hearts Friday night at North Miami.
Minus head coach Rob Irwin, who began treatment for Leukemia this week, Whitko was able to pull off a conference win at North Miami 64-51 for their coach. In the process, the Wildcats clinched at worst a share of the Three Rivers Conference title.
Not only was Whitko’s leading scorer lacking his head coach, Logan Irwin has not played as a Wildcat without his father on the sideline.
“I wanted this really bad. I wanted this more than anything.”
Columbia City senior Sierra Burlage got what she wanted Friday night when the Lady Eagles basketball team held their final home game of the regular season.
LAGRANGE — A North East Corner Conference doubleheader took Churubusco basketball on the road Friday night.
A total of five points made up two wins over Lakeland for the Eagles.
The boys team (9-4, 6-1) held their second-place spot in the NECC one game back of Westview.
While the boys’ held off the Lakers 46-44 for their sixth win in the NECC, the Lady Eagles were busy in the early game extending their winning streak to three.
CHURUBUSCO — Kyle Mathewson went from competing for state championships to national championships Thursday.
The small class A football school of Churubusco had its all-time leading rusher continue his career as one of 24 recruits to sign with Grand Valley State University on national signing day.
WARSAW — The preliminary round of the Indiana High School girls’ swimming and diving sectional took place Thursday night at the Warsaw Community Pool.
The Columbia City Lady Eagles qualified participants in every event for Saturday’s finals, led by two individual first-place qualifications by freshman Andrea Richter.

The 2011 Indiana High School boys’ basketball postseason gets underway this week with the sectional round.
