Eagles 10-runned by Angola, 13-3

May 21, 2013

ANGOLA — Whatever momentum Columbia City’s baseball team had built up heading towards sectionals was lost Monday night at Angola.

The Eagles were 10-runned by the Hornets by a final of 13-3 after five innings.

Columbia City was only down 5-3 in the middle of the fifth frame.

However, what started as a feasible deficit to overcome turned into an insurmountable one that ultimately ended the game without the Eagles getting another turn to bat. Angola scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the matchup, 13-3.

Barkley, Martin named all NECC in golf

May 21, 2013

KENDALLVILLE — Churubusco sophomore linkster Beau Barkley made 1st-Team All-Northeast Corner Conference for the second time Saturday, placing eighth.

Barkley, along with junior Brad Martin, led the Eagles to a fifth-place finish at the NECC match at Noble Hawk Golf Links.

Martin was also named 1st-Team All-Conference, finishing 12th for the Eagles.

He dropped a 10-foot birdie put on the 18th hole that lifted him from 16th to 12 place. Martin missed all-conference by one stroke last season.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS: ISMS boys tracksters take NELMSC title

May 21, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Indian Springs Middle School’s boys and girls track teams ended their season this month.

The boys 8th-grade squad took first place in the Northeast Lakes Middle School Conference meet, downing Whitko, Lakeview, Edgewood, Lincoln, Riverview and Crestview.

ISMS barely edged Lincoln, by five points, to earn the title.

Many tracksters placed higher in their events than they were seeded.

The girls took third in the NELMSC conference meet, and Whitko’s girls won.

Results for Whitko’s athletes were not available.

Columbia City beats Northrop

May 19, 2013

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City rode two home runs to victory in a 9-7 win over Northrop Friday night.

The first was a two-run shot over the left field fence off the bat of Eagle third baseman Jordan Bickle. His dinger came in the top of the first inning, giving Columbia City a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“I think the key to the game was starting it off offensively with Bickle’s home run. I think that got us going,” said Columbia City Head Coach Zac Bireley.

The other homer, also to left field, was a grand slam by right fielder Keaton Reed in the third frame that put the Eagles up 7-1.

LAGRANGE — Whitko’s baseball team lost a road contest to Prairie Heights Saturday.

The Wildcats fell by a final score of 7-3.

Both teams struck early. Whitko opened with a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Panthers quickly struck back in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own to tie the score.

Eagles sweep Bishop Dwenger

May 19, 2013

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City took two from Bishop Dwenger in a double header Saturday at Shoaff Park.

The Eagles won the morning game 8-3, and then beat the Saints again by a final of 13-3.

Columbia City betters its record to 13-8 with the two wins. Both victories are part of an important turn-around for the Eagles, who before Saturday had a 4-6 record so far in May.

“I think we were in the game, as opposed to other games we’ve had this last month,” said Columbia City Head Coach Zac Bireley.

Girls tracksters prep for regional

May 17, 2013

FORT WAYNE — Nearly 20 Whitley County girls athletes are headed to the Northrop Regional track meet Tuesday.

Though all have different goals and aspirations for the rest of the season, one thing is certain — all are happy to stay in the mix for another week.

For Columbia City junior Samantha Roush, its a state finals bid she’s looking for. For Whitko senior Josie Sparks, it’s a school record.

Undefeated: Whitko’s Winning Wolf

May 17, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — “What we are seeing here is the byproduct of four years of hard work.”

Whitko Head Baseball Coach Erik Hisner didn’t expect to have an undefeated pitcher this far into the season — but he does.
Wyatt Wolf, senior, is 5-0 on the season, including throwing a no-hitter earlier this year.

“It’s not something we emphasize with our pitchers,” Hisner said. “We emphasize controlling the controllable. Sometimes you have no control over your win-loss record. What we do have control over is our attitude, effort and competitiveness.”
